One of the problems with corporate media...
Check out this story. The first sentence:
"Most people travel to St. John to bask in the luxury of five-star resorts, dine in expensive restaurants and get tanked at shiny bars with ocean views."
Could anything be less true? 5 star resorts? Plural?!? Well, let's see, there's Caneel, and - uhm, Caneel. Oh, and Caneel. Shiny bars?? SHINY? I don't even know what that means... (OK I know what the word "shiny" means but not when relating to a bar on St. John).
Is this really an article written by someone with any interest in St. John (maybe some interest, the article does get a little better after the first sentence), or is it just some more crap they can add some ads too? Stuff like this really annoys me (obviously). I have a giant pet peeve with writers who have to write, even when they know nothing about what they are writing.

Yes, that first sentence made me wonder, too. But the rest of the article was interesting.
The only thing worse than writers who have to write, are broadcasters that have to talk. And talk, and talk, and talk.

Well, I read through the article twice and I still am not certain of it's purpose. Why was the article written? Did someone have a dead line and needed to submit a story, and this was the best they could come up with?
I have read trip reports from non-writers that made more sense, and were a lot more informative. Just MHO.......

Was it written by that guy from the NY Times?

It looks like it was written by a woman for Frommer's. I guess the gist of it is supposed to be bargain eats. It was probably taken from something else (like a Frommer's book) and cut up to be fodder for the Web. I think the whole point of the article is to be able to cram the airfare table in there and serve ads. I think a lot of Web publishers, myself included, are probably guilty of this kind of stuff (cramming in too many ads), and a lot of it happens (in my opinion) because the ad rates on the Web are so pathetic when compared to print rates. What I mean by that is that if I had the dollars that these magazines get for advertising I could probably produce a lot more relevant, original, and timely content, and not have to be shoving ads in everywhere on them... but I digress.

I noticed the same things about the article. I suspect the first sentence should have read
"Most people travel to THE CARIBBEAN to bask in the luxury of five-star resorts, dine in expensive restaurants and get tanked at shiny bars with ocean views."
That said, I enjoyed the article simply for the walk down memory lane.

I'm with jennifer on this one. Otherwise it's a real lame piece.
