Hi,
Won't be on St. John til April - but, will be on Tortola for 4 nites in Feb.
Does anyone have any recommendations of where to look for really nice Island Paintings - preferrable of or at least reflective of St. John??
We really want to find something special to put on the walls of our bedroom to remind us every evening of the place that has captured our hearts.
Thanx for any & all suggestions! _________________

we bought something that we really love at Bajo el Sol in Mongoose junction. They have lots of different things so even if you don't get something, it's work just raoming around in there for a few minutes. _________________ without ticker |

There are two or three galleries in Mongoose Junction--the one Mary Beth mentions had sculpture and jewelry in addition to paintings. There's also Galleria del Mar in wharfside village. They had tons of St. John stuff last time we were in--paintings and photos. There's a watercolor gallery up at Coconut Coast too. I visit them all every trip on a quest, but I still haven't found the perfect piece of St. John art for me. Maybe next trip! _________________ It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet. |

| We especially like Elaine Estern's works at Coconut Coast Studios. She had great paintings on her 2006 calendar, each a different house, cottage or beach shack. She also does underwater scenes and St. John landscapes, but we like the cottages the best. She has a website http://www.coconutcoaststudios.com . However, I don't think the website does her work justice. You have to go to her studio on Frank Bay. |

We enjoyed going to Coconut Coast Studio...it features watercolors by Elaine Estern. She lives in the loft above the studio, along with her two chocolate labs. The studio is on Frank's Bay; it is a lovely setting.

On our last visit, I bought a pair of watercolors depicting Carnivale and then proceeded to lose both of them at the airport I was so mad at myself! I plan on visiting the studio again, when we are on St. John in February...mia _________________ It takes both the sun and the rain to make a beautiful rainbow. --Unknown |

This is an excerpt from an article about Elaine Estern that I found on News of St. John:
"Elaine Estern’s Coconut Studios is the place to be Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The long-time island resident, and award-winning artist, opens her beachfront gallery cottage for receptions each week. The get together is very relaxed, as Estern invites you to walk around what is also her home and its new kitchen."
That sounds like a nice thing to do when we're there. I love artist's receptions and a peek at their studios! _________________

I third Coconut Coast Studios!
My mum-in-law bought me a print for Xmas of Coral Bay from Bordeaux. I forget the actually name of it but it has a coupla cute donkeys in the landscape too.
The donkeys make the piece very STJ-esque.
The artists at Coconut Coast has a lot of nice landscapes and very magical underwater-scapes.
I bought some multi-media matted pieces from one of the little stores at Skinny Legs but I can remember what the heck the name of it was. There are pieces from many STJ artists.
Maybe someone can help with the name and whether they have a website? |

When we stayed in STJ nine years ago (finally returning in 2 weeks!!), we purchased a print by Shari Erickson ("Tardy" is the title of the painting, the thing that caught our eye right away was the color of the sand - you know, almost too bright to look at it with the sun shining, and the wonderful color of the water!) We had it shipped and had it matted and framed at home. We absolutely love the picture and it has reminded us of our wonderful time on STJ everytime we look at it. Everyting and Wicker, Wood, & Shells are the two businesses on St. John that carry her work - according to her website (islandstudio.com).
Happy shopping - I hope that you find something to capture a little STJ and bring it home! |

I'm not sure if I am happy or sad that you posted that link. I am going to have to buy a couple or ten things from her. Thanks! I think. _________________ It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet. |

Liamsaunt- Isn't her work just fabulous??!!! It's fun that we know someone else thinks so, too! I would love to be able to afford an original - the Honeymoon Beach one is my favorite! I know that there are a couple of places on STT that carry her work as well, so if you ever have time between ferry arrival/departure and flight arrival/departure the galleries on STT are a good place to look as well. |

| when you are on island, stop by Coconut Coast Studios. Last year we bought a neat piece- a picture of Trunk Bay, all done in tiles...maybe 12 pieces. We even asked her if she could put a little dog running into the water and Elaine did!!! We get more compliments on it! and it reminds us of our beautiful island every time we look at it!!! Definitely stop by there on Wed. night for her cocktail party- beautiful sunsets!!! |
