Day 3: Maho, in Search of Mosquito Bites, Jo Arrives & Candi's BBQ

I love Maho!

For our first day we picked Maho for its beauty, calmness & ease of parking. We didn't manage breakfast at the house, so decided to drop off Mr. Flip-Flop and the mini Flip-Flop and head to Coral Bay to pick up breakfast eats at Mosquito Bites. Neither complained.

The parking at Maho

A happy girl

I had heard rumblings of issues with Mosquito Bites but did not realize it was already gone. We got to Cocolobo, looked around, couldn't find it, asked someone and was told nonchalantly, "It is gone but the Big Belly Deli is there in its place." So we made our way up the stairs to the right & ordered three breakfast sandwiches and two breakfast burritos for the Barbos, who also picked up sandwiches for the beach. It was pretty barren in there. One of my big goals for the week was the orange cake at Mosquito Bites, so I was a bit bummed, but I rallied when I got my yummy sandwich.

As we waited for the food (which was a bit slow coming) we wandered around the shops. I love Big Fish and Little Fish. Great selection & very fun stuff. We also hit Lilly's for some extra snacks and water and were pleasantly surprised with the prices and selection.

Waiting for Food, the Boy is in charge of watching the cooler. Bad mama Embarassed

About 20 minutes or so later, Gram had food in hand

We loaded back up and headed back to Maho. Quick pit stop at the Coral Bay overlook

Then, for real, back to Maho where we spent the better part of the day limin' away. The Barbos suited up for their first snorkel.

There were Chickens to chase

Best Use of a Float & Learning to Skip Rocks

Does it get any better than this?

Even the baby boy got in the spirit and took his first STJ beach nap

After a few hours, it was time to head back to the house, make some lunch and hang out in the pool until it was time to go pick-up Jo at the ferry dock.

Bye Maho

On our way back to the house I noticed my favorite sign of the trip.

Spent some time hanging in the pool enjoying the view.

Jo called around 5 to say she was on her way over on the Redhook Ferry, so Gram, mini Flip and I headed to the dock. The plan was to stop at Candi's BBQ on the way to put in our order. Just past Starfish, heading to Cruz Bay on your right is Candi's. Just beyond the BIG TRUCKS. 2 orders of chicken, 2 orders of ribs with 2 of each side -- corn, rice & beans, cole slaw, and and potato salad in, we headed on to the ferry dock.

I circled a few or 10 times (too freaked out to park questionably due to rumors of $1000 tickets!), but finally scored good parking. We waited for the Ferry to arrive while the Mini played on the beach. Collected Jo and her luggage, headed back to Candi's to find our order ready and waiting, and were off to the house to chow.

4 orders easily fed 6 adults, (Sorry no food porn) and we even had a little left over. It was the best deal of the week. $45 to feed 6 people! Still, contrary to what others have said, for us, Candi's is no Uncle Joe's. The quality of the meat was about the same, maybe slightly better on the ribs side, but the flavor and sauciness was just not the same. It was good, don't get me wrong, but it was NOT Uncle Joe's. Sorry folks, just my opinion! And my husband's too. Remember he is the one who thinks that not having Uncle Joe's at least one time per trip is grounds for divorce!

We were all exhausted from our various long days & were soon off to bed with our full tummies.

Tomorrow: Ram's Head Hike, NO massages & Flavors of St. John!

I love your reports, too. The pictures are great, your kids are adorable- the name mini-flip-flop cracked me up the first time I heard you call her that. You have a lovely family. Can't wait to hear more.

Did you like the sandwiches from Big Belly? We are staying on that end and I know they just started out so a gentle critique is ok Wink Thanks.

Thank you Cinnyb. Actually someone on this forum (can't remember who!) knicknamed her that during my last trip report. I was just calling her the Girl!

The breakfast sandwiches were all we had (our friends got breakfast burritos and regular lunch sandwiches to go). Everything was yummy, just a limited selection. But like I said they had been open 3 days. I was kind of feeling for them when they were discussing on the phone with someone about the non-delivery of their sub rolls. As idyllic as it sounds it must really be a pain in the butt to get a business up and running there.

Flip Flop -

I love your trip reports too! I am going in a couple of weeks and you are calming my nerves by your great pics of relaxed children. I am hoping my 2 yr takes naps on the beach.

If you have any helpful hints about traveling with a toddler send them my way.

thanks!

Melmd - we had great success getting a very energetic 18 month old to sleep on the beach for us in February. At times he was so tired, he would push us apart so he could lay down on the blanket to nap. (such willing naps NEVER happen at home)

Really enjoy your trip reports. Thanks also for your detailed thoughts on Cand's vis a vis Uncle Joe's. You've just complicated my decision for which to enjoy next trip!

By the way, my mother's family is from Mathews County, Virginia, and I lived there when I was young. That's not too far from you, is it?

Robin - try both & tell me what you think. We did Candi's for dinner and my hubby snuck in Uncle Joe's for lunch one day when us girls were off doing something else. You can't go wrong really, but my personal preference is Joe's.

I was raised in Middlesex County, Matthews was quite our football rival! I don't know if I can associate with you anymore Smile Very, very close and a beautiful area! I blame growing up there for my love of all things water!

Great stuff!!!! Two more votes for Uncle Joes while Candi's was very good Uncle Joes has a better just off the grill taste nice and smokey. If I had it my way we would eat at U J'S everytime we ate out, well maybe stop at Woodys too. They have some awesome burgers and the dippin sauce for the Mahi sandwich is awesome on your fries.
