Unicorn by the Sea 05/18/02
Reviewers Rating: Good
My husband & I rented Unicorn in April 2002. It has 3 bedrooms/baths in the main house and a separate guesthouse. It also has a pool and hot tub between the main house and guesthouse and great views. This house is located in Fish Bay. This was our first trip to St. John and even thou we knew it was on a dirt road; we werenít really prepared for the drive. The road is very gutted and rough, and narrow in some spots. It was a trek to town and the beaches and we planned our days carefully, so we wouldnít have to drive them too often. Because of its location thou, the house is very private. There is a house next door that you can hear, but canít see. Also, they are building a house directly above Unicorn, so you do get some noise from the construction and trucks. We didnít feel like they could see the pool area, but werenít sure, so we left our clothes on until the construction folks were gone.

The house looks pretty much like the website shows, except the furnishings are all different. On the upper level, the main house has a kitchen, full bath, bedroom, living room and open-air dining room. The kitchen could not be completely closed off from the outside, so there was a problem with bugs. We learned to put everything in the refrigerator or microwave. I think there was a mouse, in addition to bugs. The upstairs layout is kind of broken up. The kitchen, bath & bedroom are together. The living room is outside next to the open-air dining room. We didnít spend much time in the living room. We ate every meal in the open-air dining table outside since the view was great. The upstairs bedroom isnít furnished as nicely as the 2 downstairs bedrooms and the air conditioner didnít work. The bath is in the hallway. The two downstairs bedrooms, reached by outside stairs, are pretty equal. Large rooms with nice sized bathrooms, both with AC and sliding doors to the shared balcony. One didnít have drapes to keep the sun out. The other had its own TV so we stayed in that one. We considered this our bug free haven, so even thou it had sliding doors to the balcony, we never left the doors open.

The guesthouse is a lot smaller than it looks on the web. Before seeing the house we had planned on staying in the guesthouse because being only the 2 of us, we thought it would be cozier to not be separated with upstairs/downstairs. But the house was smaller, the bedroom only had a computer desk for a dresser so there was nowhere to put your clothes other than the closet, and it didnít have a grill outside. The kitchen wasnít furnished as well as the main house either. And the views werenít quite as good.

The area between the two houses was beautiful. The pool was great, but the sun dips behind the mountains by about 4pm, then the mosquitoes come in. The hot tub didnít work when we got there. After many phone calls, they finally sent someone out to fix it, so we only got to use it one night, but it was fun.

The landscaping around the pool area and rest of the grounds is just beautiful. The flowers had many hummingbirds come for visits. We saw an iguana at the pool one morning.

Overall, the house was very nice. We probably would not stay there again because of the roads, weíd try to stay closer to town.
