Westin Resort 06/09/02
Reviewers Rating: Great
My wife and I stayed at the Westin from 6/1 to 6/8/02. This was our 3rd trip to STJ after staying at Gallows Point and Argonauta villa the other 2 times.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Westin. We had read a lot of complaints about the quality of service from the Westin's staff. I can dispel that immediately. Everyone we dealt with at the Westin was polite and very helpful. We always gave smiles out to everyone we met and were returned with the same. Often I feel the people who complain about service at places are the hard to please types who go in with a bad attitude and are surprised when its returned to them.

The room was comfortable. We had booked and prepaid for a gardenview room through a consolidator and were surprised and pleased when we were shown to a Poolside room upon arrival. The pool was beautiful (though I only used it once.) The Heavenly Bed, while better than most hotel beds I've slept on, was overrated in my opinion. Both my wife and I took a few days to adjust as it was softer than we like and we had backaches every morning. I'll take my bed at home anyday. Other than that, I have no complaints about the room. We had a few charges billed to us that weren't ours, but we checked daily on the TV and all charges were reversed promptly without debate.

The grounds are beautiful and immaculately landscaped. The beach was mediocre at best (the sand felt like the tpye you'd find in a kids' sandbox). We spent almost all of our time offsite on the North shore beaches. We seemed to be one of the only guests who did this as the pool and beach were jammed everyday at the hotel. Most folks seem to never leave the hotel (which is too bad). For those who don't like kids, don't come here. LOTS of kids.

Vacation services was helpful in getting reservations and we booked a few trips on the Adventurer catamaran (great fun!). They did try to get us to listen to their timeshare pitch, and we agreed as they bribed us with $75. It only took 2 hours and we said no. $37.50 an hour isn't too bad.

What keeps this resort from getting 4 stars? Having stayed at Gallows and Argonauta, half the reason we come to STJ is for the views of St. Thomas and the ships from our balcony. That wasn't there at the Westin. That and the massively overpriced restaurants ($9 at the mango Deli for half a turkey sandwich!!!) keeps the Westin from getting 4 stars.
