virgin islands on line : st. john : hotel & villa reviews

CaliCaribe 01/02/03
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
CaliCaribe is located only about 5 minutes from Cruz Bay. It turned out to be a great location for us first timers.

Upon entering CaliCaribe, we soon realized that the web site was misleading. The villa was far nicer than the pictures! The villa is separated into two buildings by a beautiful pool area and commands a spectacular view primarily to the east. The main house area is quite spacious and very well layed out and designed. It has a very large great room which is separated from the kitchen by a large center island/stove area. Separating the great room/kitchen and MBR/bath is a laundry room and a study. The MBR actually has a king size bed (not shown on website) and is quite romantic and has a nice view of St. Thomas lights at night. It was actually a pleasure to wake up in the middle of the night and get lulled back to sleep by the wind chimes, tree frogs, soothing breezes and sounds of the ocean waves somewhere below. The master bath was also quite

nice and had a beautiful garden shower (didn't really get this concept until I experienced it first hand) which looked out the the spacious

outside gardens and also out to the St. Thomas side. A long porch runs the length of the side of the house that overlooks St. Thomas, starting

with the french doors from the MBR down to the pool area. The entire house has vaulted ceilings and plenty of ceiling fans. Whether to get a place with AC was also a question for us, but, at CaliCaribe, we never felt the need for AC. However, there is a study room between the living area and the master bedroom that has a small cooling unit (and, that room can be closed off via pocket doors), so, there is at least one place of reprieve, if needed. A nice breeze seemed to flow throughout the property all the

time and it was especially nice listening to the many chimes hanging on the porch area. The dining table was on the porch and we ate all of our meals from there since the setting was outstanding. In fact, we had intended to eat out 3 nights during out stay, but we enjoyed the dining setting so much we only ate out one night (and found ourselves missing our nightly "date"

at the table, even though our setting at Mongoose Junction was quite nice). The building across the pool contains a nicely decorated Queen size BR with nice views and a bath (next to the pool). Underneath the building is an efficiency apartment which was also nicely furnished. The front of the house has an expansive and beautifully designed garden area. There were

also several watermelons growing, one of which we picked and ate so that it did not go to waste!

Location: on a hill high above the SE side of the town of Cruz Bay. Down a dead end road that only had a few villas on it.

Privacy: Very good. Well separated from other villas. There was one villa higher up the hill which you could somewhat see from certain locations but not an issue. There was also one next door but far enough away and not visable, so not an issue. The only real view into the villa was from the town far below. The only negative here was occasional car noise since there is a road (out of view) that runs a ways below the villa, and the noise is noticeable since there is a hilly car climb or descent, but fortunately, not very much traffic on that road. You could also occassionally hear the sounds of the town below you.

View: The view is spectacular and mostly to the east. From most places of the villa, you can see across the town of Cruz Bay towards St. Thomas.

You can see to the SW of St. Thomas (sunsets) and to the NW of the town of Cruz Bay. It was fun to see the twinkling lights of St. Thomas at night

and to watch the boat traffic during the day. The only negative is there are a few power lines obstructing some downward views.

Amenities: Many. We were worried that since the place was new that there would be little in the way of supplies. We found the house to be very

well-stocked for being a new place. There was a bookcase filled with new maps and books on SJ, coral, fishes, cooking, gardening, etc. which we

referenced often. The pool area was quite nice and we spent many evenings lounging (in incredibly comfortable chaise lounges), with pina colada's in-hand, overlooking St. Thomas and watching the stars overhead. The pool was a nice size, however, the one big negative was that it was too cold to use as often as we would have liked. I suspect that this was because it was new and had not been filled long enough yet to heat to normal temperature. Before we went to SJ we debated about whether a hot tub was really necessary. In retrospect, we would have used one nightly since it was cooler in the evening than I expected (hard to admit...being from Minnesnowda). However, perhaps if the pool had been warmer it would not have been an issue. Also, as others have noted, DSJ provided an outstanding "fruit" basket chocked full of goodies that we used throughout the week.
