Back again after our 1st anniversary trip to St. John. As I said in my review of Destination St. John - Two Bay View, we decided to spring for a few more bucks for a villa with a view. And boy were we glad we did!!!
Pelican's Perch can be rented from www.greatcaribbeangetaways.com or www.vivacations.com, and has a spectacular view! On a clear day, you can see St. Croix! The privacy due to the vegetation was really nice, and it was right on Gift Hill Road. The price was moderately expensive for our "broke-ness" (around $200/night for a week for two people during low season), but well worth every penny!
The house is made completely of masonry, surrounded by gorgeous colorful tropical plants and there is no glass in any of the windows. There are screens with rod iron bars in cool designs over the openings, making for wonderful breezes all day and night. The masonry walls have beautiful shells and coral in with the rock and is really pretty to look at! In some of the pictures online, you see the little carvings of pelicans on the banisters of the deck. They look huge in the pictures, but are not that big at all in real life. I thought I was going to be annoyed by the little pelicans all over the place, but by the end of our stay, we wanted to buy one and put it somewhere in the house and put our name on it as a "we were here" kind of thing! The theme house thing is really a cool idea!
There are two floors at Pelican's Perch. The main floor has a full kitchen, living room with wicker furniture with overstuffed comfy cushions, a beautiful Master bath with garden shower (where some geckos live), King sized bed Master bedroom and deck. The bottom floor has a second Queen sized bed bedroom, half bath with a short history and information about the house laminated and put up on the wall, laundry room, 12' x 20' pool (not exact measurements) on a sundeck and a poolside shower (which we used as a second shower - it's wooded enough and covered by the upper deck that no one at all can see you!)
This would be a great house for 2 people, a couple and their kids or someone else you don't mind having walk through the master bedroom, since for some odd reason, that's the way they designed the stairwell to the bottom floor! You walk through the master bedroom from the living room or kitchen to get to the stairwell. There are doors at the bottom of the stairwell that lead to the poolside shower and sundeck, but we kept them locked all the time so we wouldn't forget to lock them before bed. We too got the warning about "the kid up the hill", so we kept everything locked up when we left during the day at at night.
The drive up Gift Hill made me nervous the first two days, because of the 3 steep switchbacks we had to climb, but then they became really fun once I got cofortable! We were about 7-10 minutes from town, and everything was easily accessable (centerline road, starfish market, beaches, etc.) There is a gate for the driveway that we locked each time we left, and the little place to pull off to the side while the passenger got out to lock the gate was barely big enough for our Vitara, but we never had a problem locking the gate and being in the way of traffic or anything.
This house was just amazing, gave us some really great pictures, and on our last morning a beautiful rainbow. I highly recommend this house - just make sure that both rental companies are updated on their rental schedule before solidifying your dates!
