Starlit Escape 09/09/2003
Reviewers Rating: Stars Excellent
On our third trip to St. John we stayed at Starlit Escape. We stayed at Gifft Hill and Cruz Bay on previous trips and this time wanted a place farther away from town. I can't say enough about the Coral Bay-area. It's far away from all the hustle bustle of town (Cruz Bay) so there’s no crowds or traffic. It truly feels like being at the end of the earth. Yet it’s close. You can be in town in twenty minutes. We used the convenience market in Coral Bay more than once so we didn’t have to drive to town, and discovered that it was cheaper than buying from the super market in town. The area is great for walking in the morning, too - we met many people who live there year-round. The weather was very windy during our stay with scattered showers, however we did get several periods of sunshine. The wind kept the bugs away, so that was a real plus!
Starlit Escape itself is a four bed-room, two bath villa, with an enormous deck, and a pool. It is a lot more house than the two of us needed, but the rental price depends on the number of occupants. There is another villa on the property but it rents separately, although we were told that they can be rented together. We rented from the owners, which we found to be a big advantage over renting from a realty company. They knew all about the beaches (including “secret” beaches where the snorkeling was excellent), the trails, snorkeling, restaurants, horseback riding, and shared many hilarious stories about life on St. John. We asked them to stock some food so we could relax upon arrival, and they had everything we’d asked for and more. After our visit we made a date to return next year. The owners said they had just put a pile of money into it, and everything was new and top of the line.
The house had a big, covered veranda that overlooked the pool. The kitchen was very well equipped - also a gas grill that worked great. The washer and dryer were an added plus. The master bedroom had king size bed; another bedroom had a queen and another two twins. The bedroom was air conditioned. The great room had a huge teak dining table and a a LR with a TV/DVD/cable, which opens onto the porch and overlooks the pool. The kitchen was HUGE.
The house had plenty of beach stuff - chairs, towels, coolers, and pool toys. We would definitely rent Starlit Escape again. Pretty clean, cool house and the price was right.
