Caneel Bay 01/26/2005
Reviewers Rating: Stars Excellent
I was 11 or 12 when I had my first visit to Caneel Bay with my family, and I've been hooked ever since! I've traveled to Europe, Asia, and most of the Caribbean, but for me, Caneel Bay has become my home away from home. If you are looking for glitz and formality, this place is not for you. But if you seek a place to recharge your soul and totally unwind, this is the place to be. The 7 beaches of Caneel are all beautiful. My favorite is Hawksnest and with a beachfront room right on the edge of the sand, it's pure heaven. Tiled floors, ceiling fans and louvred windows allow the breezes in and eliminate the need for the newly added a/c. The grounds of Caneel are gorgeous, with some of the oldest Frangipani trees on the island. Their fragrance mingled with star jasmine is incredible. There are hammocks strung on the hillsides and on the beaches...perfect places for a little nap or to curl up with your sweetheart. The food at Caneel is excellent. The Terrace has a wonderful breakfast buffet at the edge of Little Caneel Beach so you can enjoy the gorgeous turquoise water view while sipping your tea. I highly recommend getting some snorkel gear at the hut beside the dock at Little Caneel. The fish are as colorful as rainbows, and the turtles are wonderful to see. After a day at the beach, my husband and I always head up to the Turtle Bay Estate House for afternoon tea. The stone terrace overlooks the rocky cliffs and beautiful sea. My favorite place to eat while at Caneel is the "Equator", previously called "The Sugar Mill". You'll actually walk up through part of the old sugar mill ruins to a beautiful octagonal restaurant with incredible views and food. After a full day, return to your room and you'll find a beautiful seashell placed gently on your bed from one of Caneel's wonderful staff members. All in all, I find Caneel to be perfect. I love the grounds, the food, the beaches, the people and the lack of televisions and phones ringing. For those of you who need a link to the modern world, there is an office you can use complete with phones and computers. Go to Caneel. There's no place like it.
