Our group of four adults rented Kallaloo the week of Jan 29 to Feb 5. This was our fourth vacation to St. John and first time renting a villa.
Our top priorities in choosing a villa were: quality of villa, access to beach, and proximity to town. Kallaloo turned out to be a perfect fit.
I would describe the house as classic Caribbean. It was built in the 1960's and is very well maintained and beautifully furnished. (I would rate us very fussy in this category.) See Catered To's website for pictures and floor plan, which don't do the house justice. The covered porch and pool area were absolutely fantastic. The house was very clean, well equipped and nicely stocked with supplies. We did not need to purchase anything besides food.
While Kallaloo shares a driveway with Terrahawk, it is very private. We could not see another villa, including the one right next door, from the pool deck or the porch. Because of the elevation, the views are not expansive but lovely; the house looks out over Hawksnest Bay and the Caneel peninsula.
Facing the view, the outdoor area includes a large covered porch with ceiling fans, a table for six, two wicker couches and chairs, and cocktail tables. The pool area has a table for six with umbrella and four lounge chairs. All outdoor furniture is of good quality and condition.
Outdoor areas on the back (hill) side of the house include two separate stone patio areas, each with a table and four chairs.
Two of the three bedrooms are accessed from the porch, not by an interior hallway. Two queen rooms and one room with two twin beds. All bedrooms have private baths. The master bath had a large, tiled, walk-in shower. Good quality linens and towels, including ample beach towels. Beach chairs and various coolers also provided.
The windows in the house, including bedrooms and baths, are either shuttered w/screen or just screens - meaning no curtains/blinds. Because the villa is private, it was sort of fun but the lack of blinds may make more modest guests uncomfortable. If someone was using the grill or sitting on the back patio (hill) side of the house, they could see right into the master shower because the large window is completely open, covered only by a screen.
The house does not have air conditioning, which we obviously did not need in the winter but this would not deter us from renting it in the summer – ceiling fans in every room and on the porch.
The kitchen is large, with a bar area and four stools and a four-person dining table. Appliances were newer and clean. We only cooked breakfast but the kitchen appeared to be well equipped.
The entire house, porch, and pool area is tiled. The pool is on the small side but very nice.
One feature worth mentioning – the house has a tiny, tiny hot water heater. The four of us had to stagger our showers in order to have a short period (five minutes each) of hot water.
Washer and dryer in the lower level, which was nice for beach towels. Satellite TV and surround sound in the living room.
Access to beach:
Gibney and Oppenheimer beaches are literally right below the house, walk down the driveway, cross the road and you are on the beach. Unfortunately, north shore swells kept us from using these beaches.
Proximity to town:
Three miles. Because we planned on eating out every night, this was important to us.
Catered To was great. I would highly recommend them.
We experienced only a few bugs. Interestingly, in the middle of the week several large mosquito machines silently appeared in the vegetation surrounding the house, which may explain the lack of bugs.
In my opinion, the best indication of satisfaction is whether or not we would rent the same house again – which we absolutely would. We could have paid less and stayed further away from town and beaches but we felt the cost of Kallaloo was worth it.
