Luminaria was simply amazing!
My husband and I had the toughest time picking our villa for our honeymoon (Aug 2005), but Viva!Vacations was very helpful making recommendations about villas that met our needs (you know, privacy, view, pool, spa), and they suggested a newly remodeled place called Luminaria and we are so glad we took it!
Because it is newly remodeled it was a real joy to stay in. The view was amazing (both St. Thomas and Coral Bay), the pool was cool with its fiber optics and waterfall, the spa was great for watching stars at night, the living areas of the house had two walls of sliding glass doors/screens and opening them all made it super breezy and cool. The master bedroom was a/c which was a nice retreat at night. Also it faced the sunrise, which gently woke us up every morning. There is also dvr and sat. tv, and sat. radio that can be piped down to the pool. Also, I desperately now want my very own ice maker.
For nature lovers, this spot is ideal. All kinds of birds come to visit (bananaquit especially), and if you are an entymologist the bees living in the porch off the kitchen will not freak you out. There is an amazingly fragrant Frangipani next to the pool that you should not miss! Incredible.
Also, the villa is somewhat centrally located on the island for people who like to hike and explore more than Cruz Bay. There is a book in the villa called "St.John: Off the Beaten Path" and I highly recommend checking it out. Our favorite hike/snorkels were Brown Bay and Tektite. There is also lots of interesting history contained in the book.
Also, you have to go to Miss Lucy's for brunch on Sunday, it is not to be missed. Just head to the south end of the island and try not to hit the donkeys and goats.
You must have a jeep to rent this villa. And the driveway is insane! It seemed like everyone we talked to that lived in St.John knew about our driveway and all had opinions about it one way or the other. It is some driveway!
As for drawbacks for this villa, I can't really think of any. There were a few incidents (hot water cut out for two days, a couple of scorpions here and there, a fly infestation for a few days) but the fact is that this place was so amazing (and St.John too) that those things barely made any impact at all on our wonderful two week honeymoon.
Bottom line is: I wish we could go back to Luminaria for every anniversary. :)
