Be prepared for a little disappointment upon entering the house as the main living area shows its age. It could definitely use a little sprucing up. There was also a problem with some kind of insect living in the couch (maybe weevils) - kinda creepy. Also, there is no bathroom in the main part of the house so if you need to go to the restroom, you have to go out of the main house and either into the bedroom cabana pod through the master bedroom (in our case, occupied) and use their toilet (an added inconvenience is that the pod must be kept locked as there is access to it from the front of the house) or you have to go downstairs if your bedroom is down there. This feature (or lack thereof) is really a pain. There were also very limited kitchen stuff - we never found a baking sheet in the kitchen. The previous house that we rented in SJ had tons of spices and condiments and even left over alcohol, but there was almost nothing in the pantry or frig and we even ended up having to purchase some of our own paper goods.
Also, we were so spoiled by the previous company that we rented a house from (VIVA) and were very disappointed to not have any kind of welcoming basket from Carribean Villas and Resorts (the rep who picked us up at the ferry rudely informed me that they only do that for repeat visitors- a policy they might want to revisit) so we didn't even have a bottle of water until we made it to the store.
The two upstairs bedrooms were much smaller than they appeared in the photographs on the website and the baths were very narrow with outside showers that would reveal a tall woman's upper body. Also, it was a strange floorplan, in that you had to go through the first bedroom to get to the second bedroom or go all the way around the outside of the house to reach the outside door to the second bedroom. The two downstairs bedrooms were were nice but the shower in the poolside room was constructed of glass bricks with a screen on the upper part. I wouldn't pick that room again because of the lack of privacy. Also, the a.c. didn't cool that room very well although the other three bedrooms stayed very cool. There is a tv in one of the downstairs bedrooms and two safes available. One important note, except for the upstairs master bedroom, the mattresses were horrible.
Now hearing all of this, I am sure that you are thinking that we would never stay here again. WRONG! The outside of the house more than made up for the inside. The pool area was absolutely fabulous. There was a wonderful wet bar with an icemaker that made tons of ice. Also a small frig and a sink. All of this right by the big beautiful pool. We took the blender down and kept a steady stream of frozen beverages available. Another wonderful thing about the pool was that you were able to move from end to end depending on how much sun you wanted. Sometimes late in the afternoon when we were a little toasted, we would move to the shallow end and enjoy the shade. If you enjoy sun all day, this is the house for you you because you can always find a funny spot. There was also a great hot tub, but be careful getting in as it is very slippery.
There was also the most incredible deck on on the main floor of the house. Every morning we sat outside and watched the hummingbirds and iguanas have their morning meals. We had all of our meals on the deck and there were wonderful cooling breezes most of the time. There is also a rock beach (although I have heard Dever's Bay called a pebble beach HA). However, there is a sandy area where you can enter the water and the snorkeling is good there. There are very few houses on Dever's Bay so it is very quiet and peaceful. The grounds around the house are beautifully landscaped and there are tons of deck chairs and towels. A new house was just built next door and that coupled with the low walls on the outside showers made them unwise for one of the women in our party. We were told that the owners planned to add more landscaping to maintain the privacy that the house once had. In case you can't tell, we are
outside kind of people and loved our stay at Sunset. We definitely plan to return.
