Reviewers Rating: Great
My husband and I stayed at the Idyllic villa in early June 2005 for 9 days. We really liked the house and would recommend it. We originally were looking for a smaller villa since it was just us, but we realized that with prorated rental rates it cost about the same to get a big or small place.
Pros: Lovely pool, nice covered deck with dining and lounging furniture, fancy new kitchen, nice new tiled floors, comfortable living room furniture, good ac coverage throughout house, plenty of room, great view from deck – especially sunset, proximity to town but still pretty quiet, nice flowers & wildlife around.
Cons: Upstairs bathrooms in need of updating, only showers in upstairs bathrooms, greenery was grown up so you couldn’t see the Great Cruz Bay view from the bottom bedroom or pool, a little road traffic by the pool area, some beds not-so-comfortable, you can really hear your neighbors if they’re loud, no place to plug in your iPod (they did have CD players).
We booked this villa because it was within walking distance to the Westin resort, close to town, had ac in the whole house and had a pool. We were happy with all of these things when we got there, especially being close to town but still relatively quiet and private.
The best way to describe the house is kind of like a tri-level. The driveway is behind the house, and when you walk in you can go down the stairs to left to the lower-level bedroom suite, directly right to the pool & deck area, or up the stairs to the left to the upper-level ‘main’ part of the house.
The upper level has a big deck with a huge sliding glass door with a terrific view of the bay. We always ate at the table outside, keeping the bugs away with the overhead fan. If you look at the upper level as a rectangle, the front lower right is the living room with couch, loveseat and chair & ottoman, the front lower left is the lovely new kitchen, the back upper right is one bedroom, the back upper left is a bedroom with an adjoining bathroom and in between is another bathroom. Both bathrooms upstairs had showers only.
You have to go outside to access the bedroom suite below with a separate key. We used it only to do laundry or use the bathtub in the bathroom. It has a bedroom area, a pretty decent-sized bathroom with washer & dryer, and a sitting area with TV, and two AC units which seemed to do a good job cooling the place (we only turned them on when we were ready to use it). It has little balconies off the bedroom, but when we were there the trees, etc. were grown up quite a bit so you couldn’t see the view. Lisa with Vacation Vistas said they would probably have someone take care of that – if the view from the lower bedroom or pool is important to you, I’d check on that.
The bedrooms upstairs were spacious and the open layout of the living room and kitchen made it feel spacious as well. The kitchen seemed well equipped although we didn’t cook anything too involved. The welcome gift basket from Vacation Vistas was a total life-saver! VV was good to deal with all around.
The AC units made the house very comfortable throughout. It was nice that it was within walking distance to Chocolate Hole (saw a turtle!) and the Westin beach & amenities.
The things keeping this house from getting 4 stars instead of 3:
* The upstairs bathrooms were pretty outdated although perfectly functional. It would be nice if they could be up the standard of the kitchen & floors.
* The bedrooms can all be made up as twins or kings (twins hooked together). Some of the mattresses were not very comfortable – we switched beds due to that. Could just be personal preference.
* We had the ac on so we never heard any outside noise when we were inside. But when we were on the deck, the house to the left was fairly close and you could hear their outside conversations clearly.
* The pool had a little lattice thing and greenery between it and the road. The road didn’t get much traffic, but if you’re looking for total privacy this isn’t it. Ditto the next house has a clear view of the upper deck from their side window. As for the pool, we just threw towels over the lattice and considered ourselves pretty private.
The detractions were really very minor and we really liked the house, especially the pool, the location and the great view from the deck. Based on a prior review we brought our own inflatable rafts, but they already had better rafts there.
If you have an iPod, be sure to bring your FM transmitter because there’s no place to plug it in with a cord. There is a stereo, but it had no input jacks.
