Cocotier Thanksgiving 2006
We are just back from a week at Cocotier through Destination St. John. This was our tenth stay on the island, but our first time renting through Destination St. John. We were happy with Destination St. John and Cocotier worked out well for us.
Cocotier is a 4 bedroom 4 1/2 bath villa in Virgin Grand Estates high above the Westin on Great Cruz Bay. It has a Western exposure with great sunset views and twinkling lights on St. Thomas late at night. The morning light hits the pool at around 9AM. The pool is a nice medium size with a non-slip surface. The steps are all along the long edge of the pool, providing an easy entry and places to sit. There is a covered walkway along the back of the house near the pool.
The layout of the villa is two buildings connected by a large tile veranda. Everything is on one level excepting one upstairs queen bedroom with a nice balcony above the master bedroom in the great house. All passageways and stairs are outside. The great house has a large open plan kitchen/dining room/living room.
The kitchen works out well. The KitchenAid appliances are nearly new. The oven and range are propane driven and performed well under heavy daily use (we mostly cook in). The gas grill was quite nice, as gas grills go. It was a heavy stainless steel unit that got hot enough to grill a steak; charcoal being impractical, though I complained in a ritualistic way about the lack. A minor whine is that when the refrigerator door is open no one can move between the kitchen and the dining room. There were plenty of dishes. The knives, as always, were laughable. I brought my sharpening stone and put an edge on the chef’s knife after working on it for three days. There are now three ice chests at the house. The 36 quart Extreme cooler that held our frozen Thanksgiving dinner we left behind.
There is a 1/2 bath outside the rear of the house accessed through a door from the living room. The master bedroom, with a king size bed and oversize bathroom, is in the great house on the main level. The second building contains two bedrooms with private bathrooms. The four bedrooms are essentially equal – 3 queens and 1 king.
There are some nice technology touches. There is a wifi router with high speed internet access. The living room has a large satellite TV with a DVR. The small Sony CD/Stereo works well and is easy to put out on the pool deck. Three of the bedrooms have wall mounted flat panel satellite TV.
Cocotier is a villa at the high-end of a standard 4 bedroom villa. It is new looking and feeling and is nicely decorated. We normally go for something less expensive, but we had specific accessibility needs this trip. If you are looking for a pristine villa with TV everywhere then Cocotier will work out well for you.
