La Mer is a 4 bedroom 4.5 bath house with pool located high above Coral Harbour. The house has incredible views over St. John’s East End and beyond. The location high on the mountain means that the house gets wonderful breezes. There is no AC, but we never felt that we needed it. The breezes also meant that we were not bothered by mosquitos.
The house consists of three pods. Approaching from the driveway, the first pod’s upper level contains a master bedroom and bath. The bedroom has a king bed, a private porch with views out to Coral Harbour and the surrounding mountains, and a large bathroom featuring a stone shower with screened windows and a rainfall showerhead. The lower level of this pod opens to the pool deck and contains an identical bedroom and bath setup.
The upper level of the main pod consists of a large kitchen and great room. The kitchen is well equipped with all sorts of pots and accessories. The stove is gas, there is a large fridge with ice maker, a dishwasher, a dual sink with garbage disposal, and a wine bar. There are plenty of dishes, plates, and silverware. The kitchen opens to the great room, and is surrounded by an island with barstool seating for six.
The great room has also seating for six, a television with satellite service and a bose lifestyle music system which is wired for sound inside and out. There are lots of CDs in many style of music to play. The great room opens to a large deck with a dining table featuring the wonderful view and seating for eight.
Continuing to the right of the main pod, there is an additional dining area with umbrella. A convenient half bath is off of this deck. The “master bedroom” is beyond this seating area. The bedroom is of identical size and features the same style of bath as the others. However, this room’s deck features the ocean and BVI view, as opposed to Coral Harbour. In addition, the king bed is a four poster bed.
The pool at La Mer is small, but refreshing. There is laundry off the pool deck, as well as a fourth bedroom, which doubles as a “media room.” Instead of a king bed, this room has two trundle beds that can be used as couches during the day. There is a TV and VCR setup in this bedroom (the only bedroom with a TV).
The house is in excellent condition, and is beautifully decorated with interesting artwork. The neighborhood is quiet, and the villa offers excellent privacy. Parking for 3-4 cars is available in the villa driveway. There are plenty of chairs and coolers to take to the beach stored on the back of the house, and, above the house, there is a hammock reached by a private path.
A few notes: The road to the house is rough. It starts out paved, but eventually turns to a dirt road with washed out rutted areas. It is doable but you will definitely need to use four wheel drive. My only other negative comment is that the pool furniture is uncomfortable. If the owners purchase some cushions for the loungers it would be perfect.
I highly recommend La Mer, and hope to stay there again some day.
