French Cap – Great to Excellent In So Many Ways
Anne and I stayed at French Cap the 3rd week of July, 2009. We booked the rental through Villas Caribe, after which we were later turned over to Carefree Get-Aways on St. John.
We were treated very well by Stewart & Michele at Villas Caribe. They both did an excellent job of quickly addressing any of our issues. Having never been to the Caribbean before, this was no easy task for them. They handled our last minute changes, requests and assorted paranoia’s with the greatest of patience. Villas Caribe also handled our car rental and transportation from St. Thomas to St. John, a very valuable service for us novice Caribbean travelers!
Once we arrived on St. John, Jackie of Carefree Get-Aways met us at the ferry in Cruz Bay. She had our rental car ready, and took us over to the French Cap villa. Along the way, she also pointed out popular restaurants and the islands’ grocery stores.
Once we got to the villa, we couldn’t believe our eyes! The on-line pictures really don’t do it justice! The views are nothing less than spectacular. The location is great, you hear very little, if any non-nature noises, even from the estate under construction about 100 yards up the hill. You’re only about 10 minutes from Cruz Bay, which is very convenient. You can easily, but not overpowering, hear the ocean below, and clearly see the small pebble beach there on Devers Bay. The pool is just perfect for relaxing, watching the sunset, and looking at the ocean towards the southwest. The pool is totally private, even during daylight hours, except for the occasional iguanas that like to cruise through the treetops! After a day of diving and exploring, it could be the second best part of the villa, just after the views and location. The inside of the villa is equally nice, very well equipped and reasonably well maintained. The only problem we had was of our own doing, when we messed up the combination to the safe. But Cindy & Jackie had our fears put to rest very quickly!
If you’ve never been to St. John before, this is an excellent 1st place to try. I would strongly recommend renting a 4-wheel drive vehicle, you’ll need it for the extremely hilly roads, especially if you get stuck behind the frequent water trucks! Yes, the roads are all paved, but very steep, and some of those steep hair-pin corners … you’ll be glad you got a small 4WD vehicle!!
Overall, Stewart, Michel, Jackie and Cindy made our 1st Caribbean vacation truly memorable. The facilities were great, but the people were better!
