Rhumb Lines 03/25/2004
Reviewers Rating: Good
Rhumb Lines is new. The atmosphere is fun--it reminds me of the old Back Yard and is in nearly the same spot. Tucked in between buildings, it's mostly outdoors, but has canopies, covers and umbrellas so if you get caught there in a downpour, as we did, you won't get soaked. The bar has a couple of swings that descend from the ceiling; you can sit on them if you're so inclined.

Our local friends were loving this place for its interestin, varied menu and generally satisfying food.

The first day we went, for lunch (during the rainstorm), the service was great. Our server couldn't have been friendlier. We had some spicy cabbage rolls, homemade tiny eggrolls, and a Cuban sandwich. The 2 rolls were really good, The Cuban sandwich was not authentic, as the waitress had assured us it was... it was okay. Fine. The drinks are served in those big tall glasses filled with ice that make the drink watery from the first sip. Did not like the drinks. They also had run out of napkins, which was annoying, especially since much of the food is messy.

The second time we went, we sat at the bar and the bartenders were extremelly sullen and unhelpful. It was weird, considering how friendly everyone had seemed on the first visit. We did have a really tasty salad with grilled chicken and sweet potato fries that are excellent. We also had falafel and a Mediterranean salad that was very good. Again, the drinks were watery and bland.

The atmosphere has a distinct island flavor, the menu offers big meals or snacks, whichever you prefer. All in all, a good option.
