USVI-On-Line: St. Thomas Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews:

Ritz Carlton St. Thomas 04/03/03
Reviewers Rating: Fair
While the Ritz is often guilty of having a certain sameness and uniformity that becomes tiresome, this resort hotel does not meet the standards one would expect from a luxury chain. It's a large, sprawling property, consisting of several buildings facing a beach. So far, two five-story condo buildings (part of the Ritz Carlton Club) are being built next to it, with more planned, so I expect it to become less desireable and more crowded in the near future. If you request transportation from the Ritz, they will simply contract with one of the same taxi drivers you could find on your own, and charge nearly four times what you would otherwise pay. For example, a local driver will charge you $18 to take two people to the Ritz from the dock at Charlotte Amelie. If the same driver is sent by the Ritz, you will pay $65.00 for the two of you, without any advance notice. The Ritz will argue that if you contract with the driver, he will wait to get a full van, and make many stops along the way. Perhaps he will, but that was not my experience once we learned to contract with drivers on our own. Also, dining choice is extremely limited, and overpriced. They are not very flexible either. One night we arrived at the single cafe that was open, before 8 pm to find that they were only offering a seafood buffet. If you are allergic to seafood, as is the case with my wife, or simply, like myself, don't care for it, too bad. The nasty female maitre'd finally let us order from the regular menu, which was no great gesture on their part, since it's just the room service menu which they need to make available constantly anyway! Service is very poor here. If you call for a cart to take you from your building to the front desk in order to meet your transportation to diving sites, etc, it might come, but just as often, will not, so plan for unexpected delays. Maids tend to barge in, sometimes for reasons that are not totally clear. Maintenance on the grounds and rooms seems to have been neglected in certain areas, the sliding screen doors to our balcony constantly fell off their guides. Air conditioning was quite adequate, however, and the room was nicely furnished.
