USVI-On-Line: St. Thomas Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews:

The Green Iguana Hotel 01/02/2006
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
If you are looking for a fancy hotel with all the amenities, then this isn't for you. But if a little tropical apartment hotel with a great treehouse view sounds appealing, then The Green Iguana might be perfect.

We found it on the internet, recommended by Fodor's, and it exceeded our expectations. The rooms are very clean with newish, fresh linens and towels and are simply and tastefully decorated. The view overlooking Charlotte Amalie with the sea and islands beyond is lovely. Though we didn't use them, there are nice laundry facilities, as well as an outdoor seating area and a grill. Our room came with a full kitchen (some just have microvaves, a small fridge and a toaster oven) and a safe, as well as satellite TV. The managers are readily available and most helpful for island tips. All rooms have air conditioning and fans, and if you don't live in a noisy town, you might want to use the AC at night, as the roosters in town below might wake you early otherwise!

The hotel is located next to Blackbeard's Castle on beautiful and historic Government Hill, and it is an easy walk into town, down the 99 Steps. Going back up is a little harder, but you can always grab a cab. From the hotel you are very close to restaurants and masses of shopping, but while at the hotel, you feel out of the fray. Magen's Bay Beach, one of the loveliest around, is an easy ten minites by car, and Red Hook, with ferries to the other islands, is about 20 minutes away.

We recommend renting a car, as it makes exploring the islands and getting to the beach a lot of fun. You can arrange to pick one up at the airport. Driving on the left in US vehicles is a little odd, but not too difficult. Stay away from the main road between Havensight Mall where the cruise ships come in and Charlotte Amalie during the middle of the day. With a map, you can navigete easily through the center of the island and avoid the traffic.

With the steep prices of luxury hotels in high season, The Green Iguana is a great price-cutting alternative, if you are someone who will be spending most of your time out of your room, and don't care about spas or room service. We loved it and given the opportunity, we will be back.
