USVI-On-Line: St. Thomas Hotel, Resort & Villa Reviews:

Hotel 1829 06/07/2006
Reviewers Rating: Good
We stayed at Hotel 1829 for two separate nights, one before our week in St John and one on our way home. After our stay I can certainly understand why Hotel 1829 get the mixed reviews it does.

If you are a clean freak in any measure do not stay here. Iím not sure that the problem is actually cleanliness but rather a general run down appearance in the rooms. Our moderate room ($75 plus tax $89 total) was the size of a cabin on a cruise ship with the ambiance of a Canadian fishing cabin. There was a double bed with a firm mattress and a small bathroom with a toilet that was a tighter fit than most airplane lavatories. All of the fixtures show significant wear and tear and normal island repair methods (read nothing matched). The bi-fold closet doors were a bit rickety with dusty louvers. There was a small refrigerator and cable TV. Since we were simply looking for inexpensive lodging the room was fine with us. The next cheapest room I could find was at the Holiday Inn and it would have cost an additional $35 per night.

If you have difficulty navigating stairs do not stay here. Just getting in the front gate requires a short flight of steep stairs. Most rooms require additional climbing. Ask for help with your luggage and they will gladly assist you.

The place definitely has character and charm but that may be lost on many who cannot overlook the afore mentioned maintenance issues.

The continental breakfast was quite adequate accompanied by wonderful views of the harbor. The staff was very helpful with our request to hold luggage and call taxis. We enjoyed the small pool and pool deck one afternoon and our final morning before checking out.

The proximity to downtown shopping and restaurants is, in my opinion better than the Holiday Inn. It was a very short walk to the Greenhouse where we like to eat while in Charlotte Amalie.

I had only booked a room for our arrival night. I figured that if we didnít like the place we would stay at the Holiday Inn on our return. The stairs were the main reason I was leaning towards the Holiday Inn but my wife reminded me how nice the breakfast and view were so we booked the same room for a week later.

For value, location and character Hotel 1829 fits the bill. If youíre looking for luxury save yourself from disappointment by booking somewhere else.
