USVI-On-Line: St. Thomas Restaurant & Dining Reviews:

Toad and Tart Pub 04/27/2004
Reviewers Rating: Excellent
The Toad and Tart Pub is one of St. Thomas’s best-kept secrets. Lori and I lived on the island from December of 2003 until April 2004. Each time we’d drive by the Toad and Tart I’d say, "I really want to stop in that place someday." Eventually we did, and instantly became regulars.

The Toad and Tart is the only pub I’d been to on the island that you could actually call cozy. Anna is a delight, and her cooking is unsurpassed. Even if you’re not a fan of standard British favorites--roast leg of lamb or steak-and-kidney pie--you’re sure to find something on the menu to love. On our first visit Lori had a beef stroganoff that was to die for--made with prime rib! And if you’re a fan of prime rib, I highly recommend the Prime Churchill: a generous cut of prime rib served over Yorkshire pudding (sort of like a popover, only much tastier) with mashed potatoes, gravy, and vegetables. Top this off with a piece of Anna’s homemade strawberry-rhubarb pie and you’ll have had a meal that’s fit for royalty.

As the menu changes somewhat from night to night--specials are advertised on a billboard outside the pub--you may have to make several visits to the Toad and Tart to indulge yourself completely. But that’s not such a bad thing. I ordered a different meal each visit, and can honestly say that each of them was excellent.

Located in Smith Bay, near Red Hook, the Toad and Tart is well outside the tourist frenzy that typifies the downtown area. If you’ve had your fill of nine-dollar cheeseburgers served in an eat-pay-and-get-out atmosphere, I think you’ll find the Toad and Tart a breath of fresh air.
