I also do not know of any local events, but I wanted to express my sorrow for your loss. I too lost my Mom a few months ago to a long battle with cancer. I spent many hours and days on the road, and often dreamed of a happier time when all of the treatment would be over and I could show her why we al...

You will love Charleston. It is a wonderful southern city with lots of charm and culture. The food scene is really great all around the Charleston area - (Johnson and Wales, a large culinary school used to have a branch there, but moved to Charlote, NC. In their absence the local tech school has dev...

I strongly second Yia Yias. We found it one night passing through Memphis after a very long business trip. It was a wonderful respite after several days of subpar conference cuisine! They have several pastas and fish items, but I love the wood fire roasted chicken. It is one of their specialties and...

I have not used it, I just have some useless foodie knowledge squirled away in my brain. What kind of recipe (Thai, I imagine) is it used in, and how much? Does the recipe call for slices, grated, pieces? You could probably substitute ginger and use a little more since galanga is supposed to be more...

Mary Beth, galaga is used in Thai cooking almost to the exclusion of ginger. It has a ginger like quality, but is more pungent. There are two varities, greater galanga and lesser galanga. It is also known as galangal and laos root.

We have been to St. John numerous times and I have hauled everything from homemade gourmet salsa(before the liquid thing on the airlines) to steaks and chicken to snack foods. There is so much available now with the addition of Starfish Gourmet, that you can really find whatever you want. Fresh frui...

We stayed at Estate Lindholm two years ago for 2 nights after a week in the BVIs. We loved the room, the convenience of the location and breakfast, the views, the grounds, and the great hospitality. This past summer we stayed at Cruz Views in unit 7. It is nicely renovated and was very affordable. F...

We leave tomorrow, so we have just been dealing with this. We were told Thursday, that our corporate account would have phone service (after several downloads) but there would be a 69 cent per minute charge for calls. I would think that texts would be similar, but I did not inquire about those. Good...

I admit it! I am one of "those people" who has been obsessing about the ferry schedule since Pia posted the changes happening July 6(our arrival day). I had been giving way to much thought to the whole thing and then it hit me yesterday - why worry. Get off the plane, get a taxi and you wi...

Another Ferry Question

Given the changes in ferry times and prices, I am trying to make sure I have all of my information correct. I want to be sure to have exact change set aside for the ferry when we arrive, because I do think that the fare being $6.10 from Red Hook may cause problems at the window when purchasing ticke...

Charleston is a great city with lots of history and a great coastal feel. The restaurant scene is really good for a town of it's size - Johnson and Wales culinary school used to be in town, but they have moved to Charlotte, NC, but the local technical college took over where they left off and have a...

I just prayed for peace for your sister, health, and the ability to enjoy each day of life for the precious gift that it is. What a tragic thing for this poor young family. My thoughts are also with you. I know how tough it is to be the sister and watch bad things happen to your sister.

You are right. I read it again last night and realized I had the locations reversed. I guess I was so bummed when I saw that this all happens the day we arrive on island, that I skimmed through the article too quickly. I know that some things are slower to happen on island than others-hence "is...

See Pia's post regardeing reduced ferry schedule. According to the paper, there will be a ferry from Chralotte Amalie at 11:15 on the weekend. The 6th is the first day this new schedule is supposed to go into effect, so who knows what will end up happening. We would love to share a cab with you (mos...
