Just learned that BIC lighters are no longer banned on planes (as of 2007). They use butane.

These thermacell cartridges are very similiar, so we might be ok.

Hmm... yes. The ThermaCell butane cartridges have made it in our checked bags in the past, though it does seem to be a concern. Might be pushing it with the number I'm bringing (12). Seems you're definitely allowed to bring at least one, since people use them in curling irons, which is considered hy...

Packing is done! Tried something new this time. I'll be there 16 days, so packed 4 changes of clothes and will do laundry every 4 days (or so). It's pretty easy at Maho, so this turned my check-in into a carry-on (along with my backpack & camera bag). Looks like my 5 year old daughter's suitcase...

teefal's working vacation

Okay, so I really should be packing right now. We're driving to Newark Airport tomorrow afternoon for a Sunday nonstop flight to STT, and while I've got way too many things to do (business finances, arrange for a trip to Haiti next month, PACK), I'm instead sitting here trolling this forum, getting ...

I just tried to "Like" the last post, partly because I agree and partly because of the irony of it.

I then saw that it marked me as liking every post in the thread and quickly "unliked" the post.

Definitely would like to "like" individual posts, not whole threads.

Waveplace at Maho & STJ schools

Hi everyone, My not-for-profit organization, Waveplace Foundation, is coming back to St John for two weeks from May 22nd to June 4th. We're partnering again with the Columbus School for Girls and staying at Maho Bay Camps, just like we did last year. Our goal: to teach 3rd/4th/5th graders in the two...

become a Waveplace mentor, help St John!

Hi folks, My group, Waveplace (waveplace.org), is bringing another 60 OLPC XO laptops to St John's three schools in late May, and we're holding a ten-day mentor training workshop (May 24 to June 2) which is free if you're already on St John. If you love St John, this is a great way to give back to c...

We're back a week (after 14) and we're still in a liming mindset. Though I think in the States they call it "lazy".

We all know better . . . liming is life, the rest is spinning wheels.

Hi everyone, we're back home in Pennsylvania. We had an absolutely wonderful trip. I'm afraid island time took hold of me, which accounts for the drop off in trip posts. Also my novel, which gobbled up my morning time. Wrote sixteen pages instead of the usual ten, which is a good thing. I'll be fini...

(day four, part 2) I wake from Paula's watch alarm, feeling like I could sleep forever. I'm up first for the tuning, so I get ready and get the tram, then walk from the front desk to the Self Centre, which is a pretty cool walk. The Self Centre's quite a place, a great view of the Durloe Cays and be...

DAY FOUR ... Saturday the 23rd I throw on some clothes and sneak out with my novel. "Bugging up" (putting on bug spray) has become automatic now. I decide to walk to coffee, which from Hawksnest is about twenty minutes, and beautiful. The path leads past the infamous Cottage 7, where Rocka...

Hi everyone, especially those we met on Sunday at the Beach Bar. Yesterday was our anniversary so spent my morning with Paula and Isabel. Also another mishap which I'll write about when I get to it. (day three, part 3) Paula and I walk through Wharfside to Low Key Watersports to ask about a fin stra...

(day three, part 2) Alone in the back of a safari cab, we sit on the side with the best view for the short ride to Cruz Bay. A new Caneel gatehouse (required by Homeland Security, or so I heard), there's the entrance to the Caneel Hill trail, there's the Caneel overlook, there's Asolare, the Lindt P...

DAY THREE .. Friday the 22nd Isabel wakes at 4am and through my sleeping haze I hear "Daddy, daddy". Her crib is about a foot from where I'm sleeping, and she can see me through the bars. "I'm hungry. I want something." What she wants is no mystery, since we introduced her to her...
