Re: Best options staying 1 night on STT in-bound to STJ?
I'm with Jim on the Best Western Emerald Beach angle. All of the rooms face right onto the beach and Lindberg Bay, nice pool, restaurant, and Tiki bar, and a two minute walk with roll-along from the airport.

Re: Thoughts on Culebra or Vieques...?
Jim: We spent Christmas week on Vieques the year before we bought Coconuts, and we really enjoyed our time there. We stayed at a small multi-unit place in the sleepy south coast town of Esperanza (its name escapes me these six years later). The beaches were varied and nice, although we do prefer tho...

Re: Super Moon
There are a nice pair of photos at Astronomy Photo of the Day today that puts tomorrow night's Super Moon in perspective: Super and Micro Moon.jpg If you haven't been to APOD before, it has been in operation since the earliest days of the internet, and remains a pretty awesome site: http://apod.nasa...

Re: Super Moon
I've caught sunset and, shortly afterward, the rise of the full moon from Ram Head, but if you were interested in a lower exertion option, consider a seat by the water at Miss Lucy's, with a plateful of roast pork. Some background on the so-called "super moon": the moon's orbit isn't perfe...

Re: Zika is essentially over in the VI
Interesting... The collapse in reported and confirmed infections could in principle simply reflect a collapse in the rates of voluntary testing. The steep decline in CHIKV confirmations back in 2014 was quickly followed by a collapse in anecdotal reports, but then again, CHIKV was a much more painfu...

A year of construction at the Red Hook ferry dock
Starting in two weeks, the parking lot at the Red Hook ferry terminal will be closed for about a year, to allow for the addition of a new upper level to the parking lot. During the closure, parking will be available about a quarter-mile south of the ferry terminal, at the Ivanna Eudura Kean High Sch...

Zika is essentially over in the VI
As was predicted by health authorities, Zika infections in the VI have recently collapsed, and are now essentially zero. The cycle played out very much as it did with Chikungunya, back in 2014. In both cases, infections on St. John were a minuscule fraction of overall infections, which is directly r...

Re: Honeymoon Beach
Kate: You're all set, if you simply follow a few basics. We were there a few weeks ago, and can confirm the following info. Have your taxi drop you off at the entrance to Caneel. You simply stroll in, announce your intentions to walk to Honeymoon Beach to the person at the entrance kiosk, and procee...

You should also check in with the Chelsea Drugstore, which has a full service pharmacy. It is directly above Starfish Market, and their phone number is (340) 776-4888.

St. John gets a new traffic light!
Well, for a while, at least. Traffic light.jpg On the North Shore Road, a bit east of the Oppenheimer Beach gate, workers have been using gabion baskets to shore up the steep ocean-facing side of the road. I think that they are either extending an existing stone wall, or rebuilding one that eroded a...

A Bumper Crop of Sea Grapes
We were at Trunk Bay late yesterday, under overcast skies from the southern bands of Tropical Storm Nicole. It took me a little while to put two and two together, but it became clear that this was sea grape harvest time. Here's a photo showing sea grapes (Coccoloba uvifera) in various stages of ripe...

Re: Trunk Bay News
Thanks; useful information. It's hard to imagine how shutting down today, and resuming operation "next week" will allow the new franchisee to do much more than replace the Frialator oil, but presumably improvements to the facilities and menu can be done incrementally once they begin managi...

Re: Sad
We go back a ways with St. John, having close friends who visited in the 70's and built here in the 80's; we, in turn, bought a lot on Mamie Peak back in 2001. I only discovered and joined VIOL late in 2011, though, after we bought our first villa, so am still a bit of the newbie in that regard. It ...
