We've done the same thing (over on a morning ferry and back on the next day's ferry) and opted to stay at Ivan's in a cabin. We usually head down twice a year - in late May and also in late November/early December. I have never really noticed much of a difference between the two.

To me, a high quality queen size futon with an innerspring mattress (those cotton things stink no matter how thick they are) beats a sofabed any day.
