I don't think Tevas would be protective enough. My sister managed to kick a large rock into her ankle, but she was wearing hiking boots. I've flown Spirit to STT twice. We are carryon only types of travelers, and we don't care if we get to sit next to one another. It works for us - for now. At $350 ORD - STT, I just couldn't beat the price.
