So I am looking at maps

Post by mbw1024 »

and I don't like maps but I'm bored and I'm REALLY anxious to get the heck on this island already! :)

If I'm in the Chocolate Hole area and I want to go to Coral Bay it looks like I can go over Gift Hill Rd to Centerline and then out. Is that pretty accurate?

John and I did this for the first time last trip! (Yeah, we are dorks). I would estimate that it saves about 10 minutes.

If I remember correctly, is that road fairly steep and full of big pot holes?

The road is steep, yes,but not as bad as some other roads, from a St. John perspective. I don't think we used our four-wheel drive to navigate it. There were some pot holes, but you could drive around them.

We took Gift Hill Road back from Coral Bay this morning and it was a wacky as usual, but there were no bad potholes or construction to speak of.

Oh, now I have to find a map! What's Route 206? Bordeaux road or Catherineburg?

The road to Gift Hill is fine with low gear.

The Catherineburg road should be experienced by all

Our first trip to STJ, we stayed at Hakuna Matata and had to drive that road. Being the flatlanders that we are, it scared the crap out of me the first few times. I actually did not want to leave the villa (partially because it was so beautiful) for fear of that road. I think my knuckles were white for 2 weeks after that trip from grabbing the Oh, Sh.. bar.

We drove it again the next time we went back and were thankful that we didn't have to do it that trip.

p.s. If you take the Gift Hill Road don't forget to notice the Fork in the Road (assuming it is still there - last summer when we were there I think I remember it missing a prong).

We used this road quite a bit in May when we were staying at a villa at Point Rendezvous and had to make a few runs to the Myrah Keating Medical Center. I didn't think it was bad compared to some of the other St. John roads and we never had to use four-wheel drive for the hills (driving a Montero).
