Your post prompted me to finally join the forum so i could post a big THANK YOU for your sailing report. My husband, another couple, and I will be doing a bareboat charter in the BVI in mid-March - it's our first bareboat (we've previously done two crewed charters there) so it was good to read about specific places to check out. We've been spending a week in March on the rock for several years but the lure of the water really got to us last year so we'll start out with a week in our Westin villa and then head to Tortola to pick up the boat - can't wait!

bravo! job well done. your shirt needs to be changed to "chief - vi promotions" from "chief - st john promotions". keep up the good work and enjoy while you are still young (relative to this 70th year fan).

I forwarded link to your post to both single daughter who has done the airline groups fall regatta a couple of times and son in law who did a bare boat charter from tortolla fall of 2012. both after me to plan a "family sail" to vi's". they don't really want the old man, just someone to pickup tab.

cheers to you rickg,

papabou

Excellent report! I've never sailed and fear seasickness, but this makes it so much more tempting. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your adventures.

papabou, sailing is fun, but it is very close quarters. You need to be very comfortable living with all of the folks in pretty tight spaces. It's certainly wonderful to fall asleep and wake up in a beautiful anchorage. But, there is real work involved. As always, a no whiners rule solves most problems!

Hey Columbia, thanks! I took up sailing a year ago after 30+ trips to the islands. I love it, and Sweet Christine admits that she enjoys sailing even more than staying on STJ. We won't be 100% sailing, we have two sailing trips and one land trip to STJ planned in 2014.

If you're interested in learning to sail, you can check out my TR on sailing school from January 2013. It was a good time, maybe even a good couples trip for a like-minded couple.

Great report and pictures. Thanks for sharing. We've had several land based trips to the BVIs and love going for a day sail. Its so scenic and lots of great anchorages for snorkeling.

Rick....My Captain,

OK...thank you for sharing and inspiring me to share future TR!

We did the Bareboat trip with 3 other couples in 2005 out of Tortola on a 41' Cat.

It was the trip of a lifetime....I named our boat 'Cat-n tonic' . We didn't sail as much as we did motoring, but the experience of setting our own course and staying under the stars and shooting stars is one that nobody will ever forget.
Staying on the 'hook' and setting your own course is a great metaphor for all of us trying to create our own nirvana. Hard to believe we did it in 2005 almost 10 years ago.

Im glad we did it then and need to to a 10th anniversary...
