What is the BVI Customs Fee

Post by FlaGeorge »

We will be hiring a boat w/Captain to go to the BVI’s. I sent an email to the place we’re renting the boat from, but in the meantime – does anyone know what the Custom’s Fee is per person to get into the BVI’s?

I believe they recently upped it to $40 (ugh)! That is a few painkillers!

$40 per is what we paid two weeks ago.

I heard back from the boat captain and he told me that the current fee is $45. From what everyone said here – it looks like the fee is $40. Is it common practice that the fee will vary from one boat rental place to another?

The BVI fees depend on the gross tonnage of the boat, the classification of the boat, whether you'll be using National Parks Trust Buoys, day of week, time of day, nationality of the passengers, whether you are leaving the same day... so operators make it simple and pick a number. The fees are much less for ferry passengers, but you still have to pay $20 departure tax yourself.

To be honest, we've never paid the same amount clearing in on the same day for the same length of time with the same boat. We usually clear in on a Sunday and have to pay the $20 over time fee.

Checking in is a pain in the rear. I'd just pay what they tell you and be happy you're not the one checking in.

Cheers, RickG

Interesting as we'll be heading to BVI in a couple of weeks on a friend's boat. He mentioned not looking forward to customs and now I understand better why. We'll buy him a few as a gesture of appreciation.

We did the trip today and for the six of us it cost $52: No hassle, in and out.

He said that others generally charge him less, it just depends who you get.
