Coral Bay Marina Update

Post by iheartsj »

Here we go again folks. The Save Coral Bay group has posted the following update:

PLEASE RESUBMIT YOUR COMMENT LETTERS TO THE ARMY CORPS -

A new Public Notice has been posted for the mega marina in Coral Bay. During the next 45 days we hope as many people as possible will submit (or resubmit) their comment letters to the Army Corps of Engineers. Nothing has changed in the Summers End Group marina permit application other than removing the 75 position mooring field. IT IS THE IDENTICAL MARINA. Same place. Same 1,333 steel pilings. Same sea turtle habitat. Same 210' mega yachts. New Public Notice.

I know this sounds ridiculous, but this is what they want, so this is what we will do. Full instructions about submitting your comments can be found here --

http://savecoralbay.com/new-public-comment-period/

If you previously submitted a letter, please resubmit it. If your letter included mention of the Mooring Field Management plan, you may want to delete that since the proposed mooring field had been deleted by Summer End Group.

For those of you that are not familiar with the decision process and politics of the Army Corps I suggest you google the book "Corps and the Shore". My father fought the Corps decision to build jetties on the North Carolina coast to basically serve special interest groups that were pushing the projects. Of course the special interest groups primarily had an interest in profits and not the health of the beaches or wildlife. Also, these special interest groups were supported by some powerful members of congress from the state of North Carolina. With testimony before congress and the support of environmental experts from Duke University along with the National Park Service, the Corps and special interest groups were defeated and defunded. My point? Fight for what you believe in and understand the Corps is quite powerful and serves many special interest groups. They are also not experts by any means on the health of our environment. This process can take some time and can only be won once the majority is with you and the politicians will suffer on election day if they support this project. It all boils down to who has the clout. The developers or the people who want to see our lovely island remain that way.

I resent my email. It was very easy. This project really disturbs me and the article that bdkane posted only serves to disturb me even more. Please consider adding your voice to save Coral Bay from "Tommy Bahama meets the New Orleans French Quarter"!

The Mega Yacht News article was deleted from their site after being bombarded with comments and letters about the marina and a link to the savecoralbay.com.

We must stay on top of the propaganda being promoted by the Summer's End Group.

I saw this online when I was googling (maybe it's old news)

They chose an engineering firm:

Same company that worked with Yacht Haven?

I sent mine again too. That mocked up picture in the (now archived) article makes my stomach turn. Just awful.

Resubmitted my previous letter as well -- I'm worried that the larger outcry from the earlier effort won't carry through on this second phase, because people think that the danger has passed :(

Any way we can get the word out more widely?
