Check in at airport – AA rules and customs changes?

We flew back this past Tuesday and had no issues at all with a 3:30pm arrival for a 5:15pm flight. Probably 2 people ahead of us at the AA ticket kiosk and when we had ticketing problems because only one of us got an upgrade - we had to go to the agent at the counter. Fixed that fairly quickly. We were the only ones in Customs and our custom agent was efficient, quick and very firendly. Probably 10 people in front of us at security - I was TSA pre check hubby was not, but we were both through in no time at all. Maybe it was the day or time, but it was easy breezy!!
