aerosol sun screen harm

Post by iheartsj »

Here is an article from the VI Free Press about the damage done to reefs by oxebenzone. A quote from article:

“It’s almost counterintuitive,” Fauth said. “We think that aerosol sunscreen is to blame.” That’s because when you spray sunscreen, a lot of it lands on the sand or in the water.'

The article doesn't mention the spray effects on the people downwind. I was at Trunk yesterday and the scent of sunscreen was in the air and my lungs.

Please, I know you all love this island. Please take care of what you love so that your children can love it also.

This has got to stop!!Next thing you hear will be gun battles with Coppertone filled paint balls. These beaches sound a Lot more crowded than last time we were there.

I wish stores on the islands would carry only sunscreens / sunblocks deemed more reef safe. (Ditto for cruise ships, although I wish cruise ships would banned from doing a lot of the things they do.)

EDITED TO ADD: Just saw the petition. Signed.
