A year of construction at the Red Hook ferry dock

Post by Coconuts »

Starting in two weeks, the parking lot at the Red Hook ferry terminal will be closed for about a year, to allow for the addition of a new upper level to the parking lot. During the closure, parking will be available about a quarter-mile south of the ferry terminal, at the Ivanna Eudura Kean High School, along with shuttles to and from the temporary lot. The parking lot closure won't directly impact people vacationing on St. John; it is mostly used by St. Thomas residents with day jobs on St. John. The current ferry terminal's parking capacity is inadequate, which leads lots of cars to park, sometimes in an unsafe manner, along the Smith Bay Road (Rt. 38, taking a right out of the ferry terminal). Given that the roadside parking is free, that may still be a thing after the new upper level is completed, unless police begin to issue tickets.

More details, including artists renderings of what the new parking area will look like, are in this Tradewinds article:

All the best,

Thanks for the update; that will affect two upcoming trips!
We'll just have to deal with it...sounds like a great improvement.
