We own Great Expectations on St John and use, as well as recommend to our guests when it staying on St Thomas, Bluebeards Castle (340-774-1600). it offers clean, well-equipped (including full kitchens with refrigerator and freezer if you are bringing food with you) apartments at lower cost than any hotel we would stay in on St Thomas or have our guests use. It is located between Havensight (where the cruise ships dock) and Charlotte Amalie (not far from where the ferry arrives downtown from St John). There are restaurants and taxis on-site and, best of all, a terrific swimming pool!

We have stayed at the Emerald Beach and also more recently at the Lindbergh Bay Hotel and Villas. Both were clean and both had pools and a bar. The Emerald is much livelier than the Lindbergh. The Lindbergh is much closer to the airport.

You can walk to either from the airport and than taxi the next day to the ferry dock.

We stayed our first night at the Marriott on STT in September. It was exactly what we wanted. We arrived at 8:30 pm to STT. Restaurants, bars, roomservice, the store and other things were still open after check in. It was a comfortable fist night after a long travel day.

We are staying for the first time at Emerald Beach - can someone give me a little more detail about the walk? My kids are 9, 6 and 1.5. The little one would be in a stroller or backpack carrier.

Is the walk doable for young kids? And is a taxi even an option going that short a trip? Is there any walking shortcut or do you just walk along the road along side the cars?

Depends on the amount of luggage. But it is not a hard walk and you can watch the planes land and take off. Taxi will be around $4PP

Enjoy the Journey

There is sidewalk all the way from the airport exit booth - flat and about a 15 minute walk. Rolling luggage should be ok. You might consider sending Mom and the youngest on ahead in a taxi with all the luggage if you are not traveling fairly light.
