Car Barge Newbie

Post by DuxDweller »

Well - finally pinned down flights, lodging and a vehicle! Now - I've never taken the car barge before so I have questions. My flight arrives at 4 p.m. on 12/25 (Christmas Day). It looks like there are multiple barge companies out of Red Hook? Should I get a reservation (and be locked into a particular boat) or just show up? Any advice is much appreciated!

Well not to be a bearer of bad news but we are down to one barge so currently running once every two hours give or take and not looking good for the foreseeable future

That's good - that means the smaller one that was being used as a substitute and was not in service part of the day was back running when you needed it to be!

I received my liquor delivery today for Kekoa - one of my trucks arrived at the dock just before 7am and pulled off the ferry at on St John at 11am - not good and only getting worse with Christmas rush next week so have patience and give yourself plenty of time

My only concern is missing/not getting on. I can handle waiting at Red Hook with a drink in hand!

My boss has been waiting 2.5 hours (so far) on STT today trying to get back today and the line is around the block - 2 ferries have left and he is waiting to see if he will get on the 3rd but not looking good at this point.

I have a guest who arrived yesterday and arrived at the ferry dock and did not fit on the last ferry of the night as (obviously) it was full. There were cars waiting and the ferry driver said they would come back for them if they waited which they did - the ferry returned to pick them up AT 11:30PM !!!! they arrived on STJ at midnight !!!!

Good luck everyone - remember to depart STJ on the way home with plenty of time

It is a proven fact of life here - Patience is not just a virtue but a totally necessary requirement to live here. Island time is not a myth and getting upset about delays whether living here or visiting doesn't change anything but your own attitude.

Love City Ferries offers "reservations" which is says "guarantees" a spot. Is this true? If so, why wouldn't people get reservations??
