Update on grocery prices

From a post of mine regarding food prices on St. John on a TA forum:

I stand corrected on the price of rib-eyes at Starfish; we stopped by this evening, and the sale circular (well worth checking; on the right just as you come into the store) had awesome-looking rib-eyes on sale for a remarkable $8.99 a pound! We promptly bought two. Other items from the current (through January 7th) sale circular include:

Boneless pork chops, $2.99 per pound!

Boneless chicken breast, $2.99 per pound

Boneless top sirloin steaks, $6.99 per pound

Breyers ice cream, 48 oz, $6.99

1 liter Polar Seltzer, 4 for $4.00

Green cabbage, $0.59 per pound

Florida Strawberries, 16 oz, $5.99

Grape tomatoes, 12 oz, $2.99

Jumbo cantaloupes, $2.99 each

Pizza, buy one, get one half price

26-30 count raw shrimp, $9.99 per pound

12 pack Bud or Bud Light, $10.99

1 liter Cruzan light or dark rum, 2 for $15.00

12 pack Coors Light, $11.99

I'm pretty sure that my last container of 18 eggs was about $3.80.

So on some frill items, you WILL be gouged, but that doesn't mean that shopping for real food need be all that expensive. Tips would include NOT sending kids to buy food, sending husbands only if they get basic food economics, and best of all, dart in, grab the sale circular, and duck out to the table beside the carts to read it before planning your mission.

With rib-eyes at local restaurants going for $34 - $38 for a ten ounce portion, $8.99 for 16 ounces makes the good-old villa gas grill look pretty compelling. Plus, I hear that the drinks are cheaper there as well :-)

All the best,

Kevin

Thanks for posting this, Kevin. Never noticed the sale circular, but will definitely check it out on our next trip. We found that Sun evening seems to be the worst day to shop at Starfish for produce. Last year when we went mid-week, we found much fresher and more variety of items. I wonder if they have "regular" delivery days.

FWIW, the rib-eye sale that went on for several weeks is over, and they have reverted to their more usual $15.99/lb.

Big swells and rough surf on the North Shore this week, with Trunk Bay closures, and even waves at Maho.

All the best,

Kevin
