Trip report Jan 14-28

This was our 10th trip to St John. We have traveled 9 times in Jan and once in June. This was my favorite trip so far.

We are weird in that we prefer the East and South Beaches and quiet places. We still love St John but have found it becoming too crowded in the last few years. We like to travel in Jan to get out of cold in Midwest.
We tried Virgin Gorda the last week and loved how non commercialized it is.Very layed back.We enjoyed it and will go back but next year St John still has our heart for 3 weeks.

We are pretty boring,Up at 6 watch sunrise and have coffee, go to beach at 0830, snorkel, find shade, read, go to second beach eat packed lunch, snorkel and stare at water and read. Go back to Angel Roost have cocktails and appetizer and spend time on deck listing to island music. To bed early.

Weather picture perfect. We were treated to liquid sunshine when we were unpacking jeep and then not until last day.It was windy the first 4 days. The snorkeling on South and East beaches was still good these days.Calm water sunny skies equal great snorkeling.

Snorkeling very good and clear most days. Favorite snorkels, Brown, Haulover North and rocks in middle at salt pond. We snorkeled more and longer than we ever had. Second year for Tribord snorkels and LOVE them. So relaxing and never fog up.

Food we ate in all breakfasts, most lunches and several suppers. Miss Lucy's grouper Reuben still a favorite and ate here twice. Indigo Grill ate here twice fish taco's, once for takeout. Caribbean Oasis honey pecan chicken and sides twice for carry out. I crave this mouth watering chicken. Zozo's for birthday everything was exceptional.

Camera's DC 10 died first day. Go pro 5 and old trusty Nikon camera D60.

Lodging Angel Roost studio

Jeep Courtsey

Sorry for so many pictures in blog but I use it instead of printing out pictures for memories. http://cindygad.travellerspoint.com/

Until next year

Thank you for sharing... Loved your TR and ALL the photos in your Blog!
So many great photos but I think I liked the green spotted eel photos the most because I haven't actually seen one yet while snorkeling! The last couple of trips I keep saying I want to give snorkeling the mangroves a try and then we go to our "favorites" and run out of time... maybe next trip! I also want to try those Tribord masks out. :)

Did I miss your TR of your week on Virgin Gorda... Or maybe you haven't posted it yet?

Thanks again!

Loved the snorkel at otter creek in Hurricane hole. We saw so many fish but our camera was new and battery died. I do not care for Princess mangrove snorkel as much too shallow for me and you do not see as much.

My husband actually saw the eel. It was vibrate green and blue but color did not show up in picture.

Just starting blog on Virgin Gorda. Will post on that forum when I get it done,

Really enjoyed your detailed TR with pictures on your blog. Much better than looking at all the snow in NW NJ! And, I sort of felt a bit like a stalker, because I also wandered into your Rome TR (we love Rome & Italy, and have also had some amazing dinners in Trastevere!).
Looking forward to your VG report - have never stayed there - only day trips to the Baths.

Ed,

Too funny about being a stalker. I definitely am a stalker and live vicariously through other trip reports.

We had only been to the baths twice before too.To me they are two totally different islands but we loved the tranquility of Virgin Gorda. We plan on returning in a couple years.

Thanks for your report. Love looking at all of your pictures. I too looked at your Mediterranean pictures. Interestingly we plan on taking a similar trip next year after we drop our youngest off at college!

Hoosierdaddy,

You will love Mediterranean if you have never been. It is just such a different trip than St John. My favorite places so far is Rome and Barcelona So many places yet to see but I still need my yearly St John fix

Give Dominica a try as well as Culebra or Vieques. Small, quiet, no cruise shippers and lovely people. St John was paradise when I lived there, now it is over run with ugly developments on Cruz Bay, possible really ugly marina project on Coral Bay, and over run with tourists. Always have a special place in my heart...good memories.

Culebra is definitely on our bucket list. Where did you stay when you were there? I have been looking up information on it but can't find a lot of info on it. From what I have read it looks like it would fit our needs.

Virgin Gorda was a nice ending to our vacation and might due that again in 2019.

St John is still meeting our needs. We spend most time on south and east beaches and afternoons on one of the still quieter North Shore beaches

You just described my perfect day on St. John!

Great TR, thanks for sharing.
