We've got a trip planned this weekend and will be renting our Jeep on ST Thomas and using the car barge for the first time. What's the procedure for loading etc. Do you buy tickets once you are on the barge or somewhere before?
Thanks

You back onto the ferry with direction from the staff. Once parked and loaded and enroute they come around and collect the cash. Easy. Have been doing it for the last couple of years. I make a stop at Cost U Less to supply on the way to the ferry. Enjoy and remember to set the parking brake.

Is it necessary to reserve a spot?

Which ever one of you is most confident in a potentially complicated backing up scenario should be the one in the driver's seat. It can get a little hairy sometimes and they can be very particular about where they want you to be parked, so just be sure to heed their instructions.

Reservations have never been a thing until last year when the car barge crisis of 2016 hit (it's not really called that, ha ha). Things are much better now, though. Even in the midst of all the craziness that was happening last year, we didn't make reservations.

Arrived @ STT on Saturday. After getting our Jeep from Amalie, picked up some necessities at Plaza Extra. Then off to the car barge.

After paying the PA fee, an attendant directed us to queue up in a line of cars (there were several lines.) We didn't have a ticket. Waited about 15 min. We started loading the General II when the STJ>STT barge was approaching the harbor. Only about 20 cars took the trip.

Pleasantly surprised .... was expecting a longer wait.
