Two Beautiful Islands in HD

Post by jmq »

On TV this weekend, channel surfed past the Tour de France and saw some amazing aerial footage of what looked more like the Mediterranean coast of Italy than France. TV info button said 1st stage was Porto-Vecchio to Bastia, then 2nd stage was Bastia to Ajaccio.

Where the heck in France is that? Grabbed my map of Europe (yes I am a Nat Geo map geek) and looked along the Med coast near Nice – couldn’t find it, but then glanced down and saw they were on the island of Corsica, a short flight from most of Europe or 3 hour ferry ride from Nice.

From NYT Travel section: But while Corsica fires near-religious worship in France and its European neighbors, it remains terra incognita for us Americans. Of the more than three million United States residents who annually fly into France, barely 6,000 wind up spending a night on this entrancing compact island roughly the size of New Hampshire…

Then later on Househunters International, a family was moving from SanFran to Norfolk Island in Australia. More beautiful scenery. Didn’t see the show open, so had no idea where that was. Couldn’t find it on the globe (yes I have one in my home office), so had to ask Google. It is a tiny island north of New Zealand that is WAY off the east coast of Australia.
