Quiet & quaint. My first trip was in 1993, no tourist capabilities of any kind. More developed now but with absolutely lovely beaches and peace and quiet. Don't expect snorkeling from beaches, like St John, but I would take Culebra or its counterpart Vieques any day. Enjoy, an excellent choice!!!!

Very quiet; great beaches. But, we like to hike on STJ, and I don't think there's as much hiking. I have, however, had great snorkels from the beach. Lots of turtles and similar mix of tropical fish to STJ. Not as many restaurants; much less expensive than STJ, in my estimation.

Ok..Ok..I know it's been a while since yours truly has done a TR but...here goes. Flew out of Dulles to San Juan on United then a 25 minute hop to Culebra on Cape Air....which is a code share with United so no hassle with luggage. We took two checked and two carry ons. One of the checked was a 50 lb cooler full of frozen stuff. Both flights were smooth and the second was like a Disney ride. 8 place plane. No issues with my bride who HATES small planes. We decided to go here when a St John friend said we should take a look. I googled and found a small site that had some info and numbers. One number was for jeep rentals so I thought I should see if I could get one. Called it and met the owner of Jerry's Jeeps. Ended up renting one of his houses as well! Soooo glad we did. One BR very private house. His business is right out the gate of the small airstrip. Go on youtube and look up a landing on Culebra. It's pretty cool. After landing I walked over to Jerry's with a cold beer in hand btw. He was waiting for me and had me do the paper work as he went over to pick up Sandie and our luggage. Now listen to this...he took us on an island tour. Not the whole island but everywhere we needed to go and where to shop. I can't tell you what a difference that made in our trip. No guessing on anything. I won't go into all we did but we hit just about every beach possible. Great snorkels and two good dives for me. One beach, Tamerindo, was turtle heaven. Each time we went there we swam with 5 to 12 turtles. There were rays as well. Other beaches were great and mostly it was just the two of us or one other couple at them. Good eateries and a great bar, Dingy Dock Bar/Grill. Think Beach Bar with a dock. Lots of folks rented golf carts instead of Jeeps. They were all over the island, no restrictions. All in all we loved our two weeks there and will probably go back for a short stay in Oct then go over to St John. Jerry is a pilot too and told us he would fly us over to St Thomas which is 12 miles away. I will be performing the wedding ceremony of my niece Jessica and Mike on Nov 7th at Trunk Bay. Cool item is that Mike's parents were engaged on St John. That's enough to tell and if you want more then pm me. God bless...oh Happy New Year.....Bill

Bill,

How was the Cape Air connection as it relates to the SJU airport construction?

We are headed to VG and are flying US Airways with a Cape Air connection in SJU, all the same ticket, bags will be checked to VG.

I have heard reports of more than the usual SJU confusion due to the renovations. Were you able to stay within the secure area or did you need to exit and re-enter TSA?

Also dropped you a PM.

Thanks!

Yo...Sent you a PM but thought I should answer here too. We did not need to reclear TSA. New area funnels you down to Cape Air area. We got on a golf cart, that was nice as the walk would have been a long one. You check in at Cape Air on that level but go down the stairs to get your plane. Return flight we had to clear customs there. God bless....Bill

Thanks for sharing Bill!!! Was the snorkeling you did off of the beaches or did you have to rent or charter a boat?
