Photo Sharing sites?

Post by AquaGirl »

There are quite a few excellent photographers on this site, so I thought I would ask my question about photo sharing to see what you recommend. We don't currently use any online website for photo storage or sharing. My BIL recommended Drop Box to share photos. Our goal is to be able to share lots of family photos with 20+ relatives who want digital copies. We would like to keep them private (not publicly available unless we specifically choose that option). We don't want them to edit them, just download for their viewing/storing/printing purposes.

When I read about Drop Box, it sounds like you can create a folder to share with specific people, but they can't download them. The other option is to create a folder where they can download the pics, but it sounds like they can also edit and delete pics in the folder. Any experience with Drop Box?

Any other recommendations?

Thank you!

Dropbox is great for sharing files, my family uses it quite a bit to pass vacation photos back and forth if we are compiling a photo book for a gift, etc. In my experience you can download individual photos, if you have permission to edit. You can also download an entire folder. But are limited to a certain amount of storage unless you pay for more on a monthly subscription basis.

You can also do the same thing with Flickr, gives you lot more free storage space (1 TB). It's as easy to download for the viewer as dropbox. You can also tag them as you upload and put them in specific albums, and get really specific about who you share it to. You have to specify that viewing permission up front when you upload or they will be public, or go through and change the permissions once everything is uploaded. I use it more of a here are all the photos from the trip, viewing gallery kind of place, if you want a specific image, let me know and I'll dropbox the high res to you.

If you are just sharing a few photos back and forth, dropbox is a great tool. You can also do similar things with google drive. If you have a gmail account.

I would go with Flickr. It is very easy to use. You can setup background uploading in the phone app (if you are using the phone to take pictures). Additionally, it is very easy to upload through the web app when transferring from the SD card to Flickr.

Thanks to both of you for the info. This will be one of our "projects" after Christmas :)

I know this is an older post, but I'd through picasa out there. It's easy to use and you can also back up your photos to dropbox or the cloud easily.
