cranberry cocktail...basically a kir royale with frozen sugared cranberries. It was fine but I probably would not make it again:

Testing cocktails last night for John's 40th birthday party this evening. First up, a classic champagne cocktail. Easy--all you do it soak a sugar cube in bitters and dump it into champagne:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/28539958@N00/3049539527/" title="champagne cocktail by liamsaunt, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3024/304 ... f14e32.jpg" width="375" height="500" alt="champagne cocktail"></a>

Next up, a champagne-pear cocktail: combine 3/4 cup pear liquor with the juice of one lemon and one whole peeled and cored pear, and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and top with champagne. This was good too but it was REALLY messy. I think about 1/4 bottle of champagne ended up on the table:

I need to come up with a frozen fruity vodka based drink for one of my friends who does not drink wine. If anyone has any ideas, let me know!

I am doing a six course dinner tonight--4 courses of which I have never made before. And, I have not even gone food shopping yet because John only decided last night that he wanted to stay in rather than going to a restuarant! It should be an interesting evening! :o

In a post recently (don't know what topic it was under) we were talking about milk punches as a brunch type drink that is an alternative to Bloody Marys or Mimosas.

Today, my sister-in-law brought over a batch of hers that she makes frozen. Our family LOVES them so I got the recipe to share with you guys.

Frozen Milk Punch

1/2 gallon milk
1/2 gallon vanilla ice cream
2 cups brandy (some people use bourbon)
2 tsp. vanilla extract

- Put ice cream and milk in a large bowl and let the ice cream melt to where there are no lumps (you can help it along)

- Add the brandy and vanilla extract and return it all to a container and freeze it

- take it out about an hour and a half before serving

- srpinkle with nutmeg to taste

I don't have a clue. My sister-in-law mentioned that as a possibility though.

HELP!! Mine's got another week or so to go and I can't find any bottles to put it in when it's done. I found some really small ones (probably enough for 1 or 2 of the cosmos), but looking for something a little bigger.

AND, where do you find cheesecloth?? My Linens&Things is down to fixtures.

I found some cute bottles at The Container Store, 3 different sizes. I cleaned them out of the size I wanted, as some guy was eyeballing them. There could have been an incident, I'm glad he was wise enough to stay out of my way!

I found cheesecloth at the grocery store. It was hanging on one of those random displays that never seem to make sense (a hanger of bags of sun dried tomatoes on the chips aisle? What?). I'd just ask an employee to point you in the right direction.

thanks canucknyc.

I didn't even think of The Container Store; I'll check there tomorrow. I've tried Christmas Tree Shops, Home Goods, Michaels and AC Moore (and Marshall's and AC Moore).

I'll check the grocery store for the cheesecloth.

Thanks for the tips.

I just finished mine up today. Got cheesecloth at the grocery store as well.
Guess what? I think I am keeping all mine for myself - is that wrong?????? LOL
I am having folks here on the 19th for cocktails so will use it then. Of course had to sample it myself in the mean time. Mixed with sparkling wine here:

Great minds think alike! I strained mine yesterday and put it in containers to give away for Christmas. I tried it and I don't think anyone is going to be recieving it. It's too yummy to give away!

BTW - I got my cheese cloth at Lowes in the paint dept.

Well, I'm good to go now.

I ran to the Container Store last night and picked up a few bottles in assorted sizes. Went to the supermarket this morning and kept my eyes out for the Cheesecloth - there it was. Not where I expected, but there none the less.

So, next weekend I should be straining, bottling and sampling.

I've got all kinds of drinks going through my head - can't wait to experiment
