DOT AND BLUES CRUISE JOIN TOGETHER TO BRING MUSIC EVENTS TO ST. CROIX
~ Joint venture features both off-island and local entertainment and aims to bring economic activity and repeat business to the island ~

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, January 20, 2012 - St. Croix will be abuzz with the sounds of Rhythm & Blues music on Wednesday, January 25 when the Nieuw Amsterdam docks in Frederiksted from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. carrying an A-list of Blues performers and more than 2,000 music fans aboard "The Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise," the world's only fully chartered Blues cruise. To complement the performances that are scheduled on Wednesday, the Department of Tourism has planned a full lineup of local entertainment and educational programs on St. Croix for residents and visitors to enjoy. In addition, the Frederiksted Economic Development Association has arranged for local vendors to set up booths on Strand Street to sell crafts and local food specialties.

On Wednesday, cruise passengers will be welcomed ashore on the Ann E. Abramson Pier by traditional mocko jumbies and performances by the Native Rhythm Quelbe Band and the St. Croix Heritage Dancers while DOT greeters distribute island information and Cruzan Rum samples. Between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m., visitors and residents alike can enjoy performances by Eddie Russell at Blue Moon Restaurant (Strand Street), Chris Klein at Coconuts on the Beach (La Grange Frederiksted), and The St. Croix Blues Society at Rhythms at Rainbow Beach. The Blues Cruise Concert begins at 3:00 p.m. when Stanley & The Ten Sleepless Knights take the stage at the Verne I. Richards Memorial Park (Strand Street Waterfront Park). The concert continues throughout the day into the evening hours with performances by R&B Connection (4:05 p.m.) Chris Klein & The Boulevards (5:15 p.m.), Coco Montoya (6:25 p.m.), Shemekia Copeland (7:15 p.m.), and Lowrider Band (8:45 p.m.).

So that local students don't miss out on all the fun, the Department of Tourism and Blues Cruise organizers have also developed a special "Blues in the Schools" music education program that brings musicians into the schools to speak with students and give a short performance. Homemade Jamz Blues Band will perform at Good Hope School at 12:30 p.m., and Joe Louis Walker will visit the Arthur A. Richards Jr. High School at 1:00 p.m.

"We are delighted to welcome the passengers and performers from the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise to St. Croix to enjoy the natural beauty of the island and experience the array of activities St. Croix has to offer," said Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty. "By organizing entertainment throughout the island, we hope to create a festive and welcoming atmosphere for our visitors and spur economic opportunities for our local vendors and businesses."

The longstanding partnership between the Department of Tourism and the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise Blues Cruise has led to numerous chartered visits to the Territory. The charter has visited St. Croix four times in the past, twice on St. Thomas, and once on St. John.

VI residents wishing to get an early start on the fun, can attend the Blues Cruise Kick-off party on Tuesday January 24 at Blue Moon Cafe in Frederiksted. For more information on this party call 340-772-2222.
