Reef and critters

We have been to St John and enjoyed most everything about it. But, we like to experience different places and therefore are thinking about going to St Croix next year. Figure it is close to STJ and might be similar...yet different. Our primary desire is to snorkel over a healthy reef that has not been decimated by cruiseship tourist or depleted of life by hungry natives. In what ways are the 2 virgin islands similar and in what ways differ? Can one snorkel from shore on St Croix or do you have to take a boat to the reef? Just the start of an anticipated long list of inquiries. :)

Can't believe this does not have a response yet! It has been a while since I have been to STX - the main thing I remember about the Buck Island snorkel was that there was actually a huge amount of dead Elkhorn coral out there, but that was still (from what I understood) hurricane damage. The reefs and coral formations/fields there are huge though.

There are a lot of dive operators on St. Croix and I would think you can probably find excellent beach access snorkeling, but I really don't have first hand experience. I hope others chime in on this post!
