Virgin Gorda... First Visit-Part Three

Post by lprof »

After a restful night despite hearing hard rain at times, we were ready to explore Spanish Town! Soon we were seeing the rain showers coming across Tortola, heading our way; I felt sure that forum friends on St John were also greeting the Saturday morning with rain showers. We were well stocked with books, so no worries for nothing to do. The cottages do not have phones or TVs or internet.

After breakfast we drove into Spanish Town, past the school, church, bakery, gas station… it became clear that this was not a tourist town, more a place where people lived. The main street runs long and was quite full of water filled potholes. There is a small stone mound which is the main roundabout; there is another even smaller one at the Top of the Baths. While out we stopped at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor, took a look around a dive shop while rain was once again pouring down, then did a little grocery shopping at Buck's which turned out to be a pretty well stocked, small grocery in the harbor complex.

The Top of the Baths is a very short distance from Guavaberry, and we had the entire place to ourselves for most of lunch. The chicken roti and greens salad dish was very tasty; the view also was pretty nice.

The afternoon was spent at Guavaberry's private (gated) beach on Spring Bay. Clouds and rain continued.

A local friend who has vacationed many summers on Virgin Gorda recommended Chez Bamboo as a good food, no view restaurant and by now we knew where to find it. The food was good, maybe a 4 out of 5. A very loud and water filled thunder cloud passed over just as we finished so desert was ordered. Usually the best Molten chocolate cake I have had has been ordered at the beginning of the meal so as to be ready just in time for the dessert course. Chez Bamboo has a very true and delicious one ready to go! With my coffee came warm cream in a warmed pitcher and just after being seated we had been offered warm washcloths for our hands… touches of the British???
We met and chatted awhile with Rose, the owner who also has a bar and another restaurant. Other than Rose, Tina, and a young hostess at Coco Maya, everyone we encountered other than a few tourists appeared to be native islanders.
And the friendly, "we are so glad you came" attitude continued everywhere throughout our Virgin Gorda stay.

We got the same feeling about Spanishtown. What was interesting was we visited shortly after the 2008 elections and every local wanted to talk about Obama. A couple of cab drivers had pictures of him on their dashes. We felt very welcomed by the residents on VG.
