My husband and I will be on STJ for 2 weeks in August. We were thinking of taking the ferry over to Tortola and spending one night. Any suggestions where to stay (1 night) and if we can get away with just taking taxis and not renting a vehicle. We were going to do do an overnight on VG but the logistics and cost was just not adding up (or adding up to much!) Thanks in advance or any advice.
Myetts, it is on a nice beach, has a lovely spa, great restaurant, you can sit by the beach, and wonderful people. Avoid Sebastian's on the Beach. Worse stay I have even had anywhere in the Caribbean. IF you go for a rental car, do Denzil Cline, I have rented from him since the mid 80s. Tortola has one of the original rum distilleries in the VIs. They still work, it is an interesting history lesson...and you get free samples!
We have stayed twice on Tortola.
Once at the Sugar Mill and once at The Heritage Inn. Both are isolated enough that I wouldn't try them if I was only there for an evening.
For a one night stay I would certainly look at the places in Cane Garden Bay such as Myett's. Do look at the cruise ship schedule to ensure you will not be run over with cruisers when you are trying to relax on the beach.
You will be able to catch a taxi directly off the ferry at the West End. No need to rent a vehicle if your intent is to go to your hotel and relax on the beach.
If it was my first overnight stay on Tortola, this is what my agenda/schedule (yes i am a planner, planner, planner!)
Catch the 8:30 or 11:30 am ferry from STJ to West End. Arriving around lunch time, walk down to Fish and Lime for some lunch and liquid refreshments. Have taxi take you on island tour (West and North Ends) dropping you in Cane Garden Bay. Check in to your hotel and relax. Cocktails at Quito's and dinner at Myett's. Enjoy you next day in Cane Garden Bay. When headed back to the West End Ferry, stop in either Road Town or Soper's Hole to explore some.
Myett's is about a 20 minute taxi ride from the West End. You will cut up across Zion Hill and follow the Northern shore to get to CGB. You will pass the following on your way to Myett's.
De Coal Pot, Sebastian's, Bomba's, Sugar Mill, Distillery (mentioned above) in Carrot Bay, The Heritage Inn (Bananakeet also at this location), and then drop down into Cane Garden Bay. My list may not have caught every spot you pass, but it certainly lists a few of my favorites.
Thank you ski2play! equineannie also mentioned Myett's, I have emailed them twice now and I have not heard back from anyone. I realize the wheels turn slowly but we will be on STJ on 8/6 and wanted to get this cemented down. Thank you for the suggestions, I am a planner as well!
Might be better to call them vs emails. I have learned that the phone and personal conversation is your best bet when making plans in the BVI.
There are other places to stay in Cane Garden Bay, a google search or a search on Trip Advisor should bring them up. With only staying one night CGB will give you the most BVI experience for the short time frame.
We loved our stay at Sugar Mill, it is by far my favorite place for dinner when on Tortola. I must admit, after staying on St John for years, I was somewhat underwhelmed with the beaches and snorkeling on Tortola. You will love the people, the live music, and the atmosphere (including the cocktails and food).
Let me know if you have other questions, we loved the BVI so much we purchased a villa on Jost!
Thanks, it was a challenge, but all worth the struggles in the end!
It is a rental for now. Check out Hideaway Villa on Facebook or www.sandygroundestates.com.
Tried to post this the other day but the internet gods turned against me and it got lost.
I now second everyone else's suggestions. CGB is THE place for a short stay in Tortola, especially if you don't plan to drive. You can stay at Myett's, Cane Garden Bay Cottages (quieter as it is a little away from the action), Elm's Beach Suites and several more places. All walking distance from each other. Some have a 2 night minimum stay. Best to call. From experience I know that internet connections can be spotty in that area. There are many restaurants in that area as well in all price ranges, but for fine dining Myett's is the place to go in CGB.
If you get there on a Friday Elm's does a Friday BBQ with a band that is great fun. Sat. Quito performs in his club which I believe has reopened after extensive renovation. He is hands down one of the greatest unknown talents I have ever heard. Callwood Distillery is definitely worth a visit. It is the oldest rum distillery in the Caribbean.
Tortola's hills are steeper than STJ's, so be prepared for a rollercoaster ride to CGB. It has a different feel, partly cuz it's more British than American. As everywhere else courtesy and respect are valued.
Enjoy your stay!
Thank you watergirl, after sending 2 emails with no success, I called Myett's and spoke with Kimmy, a very nice gal who booked us for one night. I am curious to see if Tortola has a different vibe compared to what we are used to on STJ. It will be a new experience, countdown is 20 days
