Actually, kids passports are good for 5 years, but unfortunately, you can't renew them at expiration. You must start all over with a new passport application. We just went through that last week for our girls. The application cost is a little less for minors, we paid $80 per child and $50 to the public library for processing. Hopefully the turnaround time isn't too long.

Oops! You're right, 5 years for kids under 16(forgot how old my son is for a minute! Bad Mom!). And you do need both parents present to get it. I think I paid $60 for the passport and another $25 something or other fee. Looks like I'll be going through the process again in early 2011! I plan on getting one right away with the new baby. With my son, I waited until he was almost 3 because we were going to Sweden for his 3rd birthday. That is when I got my first passport as well. It's made traveling a lot easier.
