Vintage St. John travel video
Vintage St. John travel video
I don't know if his blog is read by a lot of the folks on this forum, so I thought I would point out that today on his News of St. John blog: http://barnako.typepad.com/
Frank Barnako provided a link to an old (1960s) travel video about St. John produced to encourage tourism. It is a very interesting video and has footage of Caneel Bay, the rental cars of the time, some restaurants, boating, fishing etc.
See it here for a trip in the "way back machine":

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Loved the music - reminded me of going to the movies as a child. I wonder how those big rental cars did on the roads back then - I bet that was an adventure!

I think this video is the same as the one shared a short while ago by bchbum82... I am linking it here as there are some comments in that thread also.

Need to point out again, that more than half of this film is St Croix, there's also some st thomas, and the date is late 50's--no rental cars on St John.

did Caneel have a golf course. Which would make sense the other Rock resorts didhugo wrote:Need to point out again, that more than half of this film is St Croix, there's also some st thomas, and the date is late 50's--no rental cars on St John.

Re: Vintage St. John travel video
Never a golf course at Caneel--or at Little Dix; there's not enough water available to irrigate greens most places in the VI.
This film is difficult to sort out because the footage goes back and forth between Caneel and the Buccaneer on St Croix. The Buccaneer looked similar to Caneel in that era, and they had a golf course--still do, I think. St Croix is geologically different from the northern VI and has accessible groundwater.
