Gas station etiquette?

I was just reading about the progress of the refurbishing of E&C gas station on STJ and they seem to be real proud of the new self-service pumps they plan to put in.

This got me to thinking... I have pumped my own gas for years now. In fact I can't remember the last time I saw a gas station that offered to pump it for you!

Do people pump their own gas on St. John? I don't want to get out of the car and start filling my own tank if that's not acceptable behavior. :?

St John has always been full service as far as I know. This will be a switch.

If someone is there to pump it, I let them. If they're not immediately available, I'll get out and pump my own gas. Sometimes they'll come over when I'm halfway through and finish for me...I've never been yelled at either way.

Are we supposed to tip. If so, how much?

Oregon and NJ (talk about strange bedfellows) = only mainland states left with full service gas stations.

We actually have quite a few here in CT, my mom is 64 and has never pumped her own gas.

We pump our own, but we do still have full service stations. They usually cost a few cents more per gallon. I use them only when it is freezing cold outside. :)

Let me clarify - you can't pump your own in NJ and Oregon - one price for full service all the time.
