Only on St John........

Post by Pia »

would a bus driver........

a) Stop at the Smoothie stand, get out of the bus to get a smoothie
b) Stop at the school by the roundabout (in the middle of the road), get out of the bus, enter the classroom and remove a child from class because the bus would not be back in time and school would be out.
c) Stop in the middle of the road at Windy Level restaurant, send a child across the street to pick up dinner
d) Fail to stop to pick up a passenger because "he owes my family money"
e) All of the above

:) :) :)

This is a great story. We have experienced this type of thing many times in taxis on various Caribbean islands. Stopping to chat with their friends in the middle of the road, or stopping at the little local store for snacks and a chat seems to be common.

Our funniest experience was on Antigua where the taxi driver picked us up, then stopped at the cleaners and picked up clothes, then drove to his mother's house, dropped off the clothes and picked up a cake. Next we went to his sister's house to drop off the cake. Each stop took a little while since you don't just run in and out, like we do in busy Washington, DC suburbs. You stay and chat a while. He finally took us to our hotel. He explained that tires and gas are very expensive so he makes the most of his routes. No apologies, thats the norm!

Our driver Westie stopped off at Pine Peace one night to grab an ice cream because "he hadn't been able to get any dessert". He was nice enough to offer to buy us one as well! LOL

Different days and different drivers (I think) I'll pay more attention from now on as I was on the bus each time not behind it :)

Windy Level is now open again (that incident was 10 days or so ago :) )

That is a great story B&J [/color]

love it! (I agree, 'D' is the best.)

Once in New Orleans I was riding the Charles St. streetcar, and the driver (conductor?) stopped the car and went into a restaurant to go pick up his dinner (and catch up on some gossip as well, because it took a while!)

I wonder what would happen if a T driver tried that here in Boston?

In June my sister and I timed it perfectly so we would make the 4:00 ferry to St. John from the airport. What we didn't account for was the driver stopping to pick up his friend so he could take him to work, stopping again to get $5 worth of gas, then making one final stop at his house to get a new CD, "this one was getting old". Not only did we not make the 4:00 ferry, we didn't make the 5 either! We didn't care because we were thoroughly entertained by his nonstop singing but I think the guy from Gallows waiting to pick us up may have gotten a little annoyed!
Sadly, I am tickerless :(

Man! D. can be a tricky one! I married a West Indian "baan ya" (born here) and now I am related to most of the island in some way. (I'm still trying to work on the very large and complex family tree that I'm now a part of.) That guy isn't going to get much done until the debt is paid. Love it Pia!

How wonderfully eccentric, what a hoot that guy is!

Nah, he's an inconsiderate a$$hole.
