This is a great story. We have experienced this type of thing many times in taxis on various Caribbean islands. Stopping to chat with their friends in the middle of the road, or stopping at the little local store for snacks and a chat seems to be common.
Our funniest experience was on Antigua where the taxi driver picked us up, then stopped at the cleaners and picked up clothes, then drove to his mother's house, dropped off the clothes and picked up a cake. Next we went to his sister's house to drop off the cake. Each stop took a little while since you don't just run in and out, like we do in busy Washington, DC suburbs. You stay and chat a while. He finally took us to our hotel. He explained that tires and gas are very expensive so he makes the most of his routes. No apologies, thats the norm!

Once in New Orleans I was riding the Charles St. streetcar, and the driver (conductor?) stopped the car and went into a restaurant to go pick up his dinner (and catch up on some gossip as well, because it took a while!)
I wonder what would happen if a T driver tried that here in Boston?

In June my sister and I timed it perfectly so we would make the 4:00 ferry to St. John from the airport. What we didn't account for was the driver stopping to pick up his friend so he could take him to work, stopping again to get $5 worth of gas, then making one final stop at his house to get a new CD, "this one was getting old". Not only did we not make the 4:00 ferry, we didn't make the 5 either! We didn't care because we were thoroughly entertained by his nonstop singing but I think the guy from Gallows waiting to pick us up may have gotten a little annoyed!
